Fascinating. I had to look it up. What a wonderful memory. Dodie was a nurse for tourist ships (not crew ships, but the kind with sails..ha) in the Caribbean & Bahamas early in her career.

I used to love sailing, first on the east coast of England and later in the Morbihan in France when the movement to replicate traditional working boats was taking place. The big thrill was sailing on a Loire gabare….this will give you an idea of the type – https://www.larabouilleuse-ecoledeloire.com/baladesenbateau/…..shooting the bridge at Ponts de Ce on the way to Nantes and through the city itself the huge bow lifting as a heavy gust hit the squaresail.
