The Night Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee Met

From Chuck Norris

It’s 1967, the best karate fighters in the world gathered at Madison Square Garden for the All-American Karate Championship.

I trained hard for this event and was in peak physical and mental condition.

The tally would reach 13 fights in 11 hours…

But in the end, I prevailed and was crowned Grand Champion.

Having literally been fighting day into night, I decided to skip the celebration and head to my hotel for a hot shower and a good night’s sleep.

However, as I was leaving the arena, who should step up to congratulate me but Bruce Lee.

We had never met, but I certainly recognized him, considering he was one of the best-known martial artists in the world.

Discovering we were staying at the same hotel, we walked back together, sharing our thoughts about martial arts and our philosophies on all manner of things.

We immediately hit it off.

The conversation continued as we stepped into the elevator around midnight, and before you knew it…

We were exchanging our martial art techniques and conducting a workout, tossing each other around in the hotel hallway.

(Strangely, no one complained to the management.)

Only after we’d stopped did we realize we’d been hanging out for four hours. Bruce was so engrossing it only seemed like twenty minutes.

This was the first time I’d worked out with Bruce… but it wouldn’t be the last. After that fateful night in New York City, we became good friends, and I miss him to this day.

Not long after, Bruce asked me to work out with him in the backyard of his Culver City home.

We would share and teach our signature moves — Bruce his Kung fu techniques, and me some Taekwondo high kick moves.

For example, Bruce never believed in kicking above the waist, but he was intrigued by my high-spinning heel kicks, and within six months, he could perform them nearly better than me.

The point is, regardless of your ability, there’s always something valuable you can learn from others.

Because sometimes, it takes the help of others to provide the inspiration and motivation we need to get going and reach our goals.

This is why I always encourage people — especially those just getting started or coming back after a long hiatus — to team up with a partner or even a group.

Your partner is there to help you better yourself, hold you accountable, and simply make your workout more engaging.

And the best part is, you and your partner can do whatever workouts you find mutually beneficial.

For Bruce and I, that was martial arts training.

Maybe for you, it’s walking, biking, pickleball, tennis, golf, lifting weights, boxing…

You name it — just as long as it gets your body moving and your blood pumping.
