Here is Why Disgraced TX House Speaker Will Not Return to That Position

Paxton Exposes Phelan’s Betrayal

Controversial Texas House Speaker since 2021, Dade Phelan of Beaumont announced on Friday that he will not seek reelection for that position but will continue to serve as state representative of District 21, where he has served since 2015.

Paxton was quick to release this statement

“Phelan’s legacy is one of betrayal: prioritizing Democrat interest over his own caucus, leaving Texas Republican members exposed, attempting a shameful impeachment stunt, and consistently failing to deliver for the voters who sent him to Austin. His so-called ‘leadership’ disqualified him long before this moment,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement.

House Republicans, who hold a 88-62 majority heading into the Jan. 14 start of the 2025 legislative session, meet behind closed doors Saturday to see if they can unite behind a single candidate. That would leave outnumbered House Democrats powerless to affect the outcome.

Phelan was looking to a bloc of Democrats and uncommitted Republicans to secure a third term as speaker. But he never produced a list of supporters, while Rep. David Cook of Mansfield built momentum this week by gaining new backers, bringing him closer to the votes needed to lock up the GOP caucus’ endorsement this weekend.

Under their caucus rules, whoever gets 60% or more of the votes at Saturday’s meeting will secure the group’s endorsement and receive support from all 88 Republican members when the vote goes to the full House in January — enough to win the gavel.

While the liberal media has championed Phelan, recent elections have not been kind to him. Voters elected a new set of GOP freshmen to rid the state of pro-Phelan RINO-type representatives.

These new representatives are part of a coalition, led by the House’s more MAGA oriented that will be supportive of President Donald Trump’s clean up after the mess of the past Obama-Biden-Harris-Pelosi era.

Pelosi & Phelan

The conservative and middle constituency majority voters of Texas want to reshape the chamber by disempowering Democrats and weakening key levers of power used by Phelan-types.

“The future of fiscal policy in Texas stands at a crossroads,” wrote Texans for Fiscal Responsibility. “Will our elected leaders, who we have entrusted to fulfill our will through responsible policy implementation, listen to the voices of their constituents and bring change and reform to the legislature; or, will they settle for the routine, business-as-usual that has done nothing for the taxpayers?”

Phelan held a practice of appointing Democrats to chair any House committees which caused Democrats to be in charge of eight of the chamber’s 34 standing committees.

“Serving in the Texas House is one of the greatest honors of my life, beginning as a staff member in this Capitol, advancing to represent my community as a state legislator, and ultimately leading for four years as Speaker of the Texas House,” Phelan said.

“Out of deep respect for this institution and its members, and after careful consideration and private consultation with colleagues, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the race for Speaker of the Texas House,” he continued. “By stepping aside, I believe we create the best opportunity for our members to rally around a new candidate who will uphold the principles that make our House one of the most exceptional, deliberative legislative bodies in the country—a place where honor, integrity, and the right of every member to vote their district takes utmost precedent.”

  1. Slimy, isn’t he, and sure not photogenic. But the tide is turning; we see it in our NH Legislature too, bit by bit. There’s a tight-knit growing group of organized praying people in Concord too, some in the government, and more throughout the state. Bad players are getting moved out; I applaud Paxton, once again.
