Beginning from a two room school house, Dodie and I grew up in the same era of the same area.
Some of the things we learned along the way from parents, adults and older children were:
● It’s against the law to drive with the overhead light on.
● If you swallow your chewing gum, it will stay in your stomach for 7 years.
● Keep making that face and it’ll stay like that.
● I have eyes in the back of my head.
● You cannot swim for 30 minutes after eating.
● If you sit too close to the TV, you’ll go blind.
● I’m just running to the store for one thing.
● A watermelon will grow in your stomach if you eat the seeds.
● Maybe…I’ll think about it.

Clever Journeys 
Oh gosh, where to start? You and little Loralyn haven’t changed! You just have more character lines! I remember about the overhead light, and I think my mother told me about the chewing gum. Up here, it was an hour after eating, maybe because the water’s colder. Heat registers are a very good thing, and can still be found here. I knew a cat who loved to sit on them. You can still find those bottle machines in Vermont. They may be crazy over there, but they’ve hung on to some good stuff. I still have my phone directories; they are very handy sometimes, and I carry one in my Rav4, because even if I don’t have a cell phone right now, somebody else always does. They only quit making them in NH about 5 years ago. That’s right, you never see monkey bars anymore! That stinks. That hula hoop picture reminds me of Biden’s so called campaign in 2020. Everyone needs a pencil sharpener, I think you can still get the gum cigars in the Vermont Country Store and definitely the wax bottles, yum, my first movies were in a Drive In, and I believe that same Drive In is still in operation in Woodsville, NH, and there’s one across the river in VT. I still have a 45, or maybe a boxful, somewhere, remember the party line well, and right now have the old handmade stool the old phone used to sit on in our front hall. You had to sit on the stairs to use it. Absolutely, metal lunchboxes with a thermos inside, and later, the ones with the TV cartoon characters on them. I bet you can still buy them in Vermont; the thermos kind. Who can forget Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans and Bunny Rabbit? Madge, “You’re soaking in it now.” “What! Dishwashing Liquid??” See what marketing does? Wow. Or, “Please don’t squeeze…” or Lily Tomlin on Laugh In, but I liked Candid Camera better, and we do Keep On Truckin’. We’ve got persistence and a long memory! Dangerous things to tangle with. That was fun.

We still have an old BOSTON Champion pencil sharpener we use that my husband inherited from his side of the family. It’s as heavy as a watermelon. 🙂

Jack and Dodi, I’m amazed that we survived those decades! I still have a few of the raisin guys, and around 10 years ago gave my 1950s era Lawn Darts to a neighborhood kid, who immediately pegged one of his friends, so we had to have been smart enough to not kill us or our buddies.

Yes to most of the above! I fondly remember playing hopscotch and dodgeball at recess, climbing monkey bars, running relay races, and riding our bikes ~ all while wearing dresses, which we were required to wear all the way through High School!
Playing Hide ‘n Seek, Keep Away/Monkey in the Middle, Red Light-Green Light, Tag – You’re It, and Simon Says.
Candy necklaces, Big Red Floats, Hot dogs and Snowcones at my brother’s baseball games, my Mom’s homemade Banana Cream Pie & Banana Pudding, and Kool-Aid … my favorite flavor was cherry.
I wouldn’t trade where and when I grew up for all the tea in China. ☺️

That’s right, the reason girls’ bikes didn’t have a top bar was so our dresses could stay down! I think my favorite Kool Aid was cherry, too. Banana pudding: we up here never heard of it, I found out when a friend from North Carolina made it and became a devotee. That’s so good.
