One of the first articles attempting to explain the “misbehavior” of teenage girls watching Elvis Presley came out on September 28, 1956.

Entitled โGirls Identify Elvis as Loverโ in the New York Daily Mirror, writers Norman Miller and James McGlincy tried to uncover the reasons behind the Elvis phenomenon by consulting psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. After doing so, they came to the following shocking conclusion.

โWhen a teenager on the threshold of womanhood watches or listens to Elvis Presley, there is only one thing on her mindโsex.

She may deny this. She may not even believe it herself. But thatโs what it is, according to specialists.โ

Miller and James then presented their evidence in the form of quotations from these โeminent,โ but unnamed, specialists.

โWatch their faces,โ one psychiatrist said of the girls in Elvisโ audiences.

โSee their twitching, their uncontrolled movements. They are in ecstasy.”

“They have identified Presley as their lover. Many of them are, to use an old-fashioned term, โgood girls.โ”

“Most of them, probably. They never would let themselves go with their own boyfriends. But, watching Presley, itโs safe.โ

Momo and I watched the “Elvis” movie last night, for the second time. All you say makes sense to me. When Elvis played the Big D Jamboree in Dallas, my father was in the stage band. He said there were as many screaming adult married women as teenage girls. He remembers Wanda Jackson fainting when she met and shook hands with E. If you haven’t seen the movie, you’re missing a good one. Nice work and great old pics.

Yes, saw it when it came out & received DVD as a present. That’s cool about your father.

Thanks, Jack. Yeah, my father was lucky and in the right place in history. I was just a kid picking up the crumbs.
