After the U.S. declared independence from Britain on July 4, 1776, General George Washington issued orders for the Declaration of Independence to be read aloud to the Continental Army, while also declaring our need for God and Christian virtues:

“The blessing and protection of Heaven are at all times necessary but especially so in times of public distress and danger. The General hopes and trusts that every officer and man will endeavor to live and act as becomes a Christian soldier, defending the dearest rights and liberties of his country.” – Washington’s General Order, July 9, 1776.

We spent our July 4, 2026 honoring America at church and with our community.

Pastor Mack Elkin called a day before asking if I would read aloud my recent CleverJourneys article regarding how America was founded and established firmly on Christian principles.

At church, we welcomed new visitors, neighbors and some from our own congregation to spearhead a local event simultaneously with communities across the nation at the same time.

At 1:50 CST, the United States rang church bells in unison, thanking God for His blessings.

Keith Mills led the church in song with God Bless America, Battle Hymn of the Republic and Star Spangled Banner. Keith and Amy Mills always help with our community events sponsored by the church.

Pastor Mack said some words and with a perpetual smile on his beaming face, raised up children so they could have the honors of ringing the church bell.

Later, Dan and Linda Poston hosted a barbecue and with a shooting event honoring the 20th Century soldier on their property nearby. Dan, a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War, is noted for his patriotism. Linda is an eager lady devoted to helping our church and community through volunteerism.
Pastor Mack, with his lovely and intelligent wife, Jennifer (a Registered Nurse, like Dodie was for 40 years) came to bless the meal and meet others.
