The following scams are on the rise again towards the general public, but especially against our senior citizens and elders.
Fraudsters and scammers are constantly finding new ways to steal money from unsuspecting victims. They often target older adults because of their life savings, trust, and sometimes less familiarity with the latest tricks. These include:
Impersonation Scams
Calls or messages pretending to be from the IRS, Social Security, police, or banks, claiming you owe money or your accounts are in danger.
Tech Support Scams
Pop-ups or calls claiming your computer is infected and demanding payment to “fix” it.
Romance Scams
Fraudsters building fake relationships online to ask for money for emergencies, travel, or investments.
Grandparent Emergencies
Urgent calls claiming a grandchild is in trouble and needs money wired immediately.
Investment or Lottery Scams
Promises of huge returns, prizes, or inheritances that require upfront fees.
Red Flags: Pressure to act fast, requests for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or personal information, and callers who get angry when you question them.
What You Should Do:
• Never send money, share personal details, or click suspicious links.
• Hang up on unknown callers and verify any urgent requests through official channels (you can always call the real organization using a number you look up yourself).
• Use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and talk to family or trusted friends before making big decisions.
If something feels wrong, it probably is — trust your instincts.
If you or someone you know has been targeted or victimized, SPEAK UP and REPORT IT immediately.
Even if you lost money, reporting helps stop these criminals and protects others.

Well, I am likely protected by my circumstances from all of these scams. Since I am married, I had darn well better keep my nose out of romance scams (or that nose will be off at the neck).
I know the IRS only communicates via print and never asks for gift cards.
I do my own programming and tech support. Further, I am the best definition of skinflint and do not subscribe to any paid services.
I may have a son, but no grandkids yet.
And, when it comes to the lottery, you have to play before you can win (and I know the lottery is a tax on people bad at math).
Finally, I call my investments. They do not call me.

Excellent rundown, y’all. We confront these types of attempts practically every day. What you said about ‘clicking suspicious links’ – we treat ALL links as suspicious unless we truly know the source and trust them.

Here’s another one: only have an archaic landline with an anwering machine and screen all calls.
