A new Pew Research Center survey finds that:
- An overwhelming majority, 83% of all U.S. adults believe people have a soul or spirit in addition to their physical body.
- 81% say there is something spiritual beyond the natural world, even if we cannot see it.
- 74% say there are some things that science cannot possibly explain.
- 71% of Americans believe in heaven, while somewhat fewer – 61% – believe in hell and 60% believe in both. These numbers have held steady in recent years.
- A smaller majority (57%) believes that animals other than humans can have their own spirits or spiritual energies.
- 45% say they have had a sudden feeling of connection with something from beyond this world.
- 38% say they have had a strong feeling that someone who has passed away was communicating with them from beyond this world.
- 30% say they have personally encountered a spirit or unseen spiritual force.
Overall, 70% of U.S. adults can be considered “spiritual” in some way, because they think of themselves as spiritual people or say spirituality is very important in their lives.
Pew Research Center has asked about belief in heaven and hell on four previous occasions in their American Trends Panel (ATP) surveys since 2017. The results have been fairly stable, hovering between 71% and 74% of U.S. adults who say they believe in heaven and 60% to 62% who say they believe in hell.

I agree with most of those stats. I am, and always have been a Christian, aiming to follow a righteous path, but not always succeeding. I have known people that were “spiritual” but not exactly Christian or religious’: they were flat our weird. One was a clairvoyant and the other a physic healer of sorts. Both were close relatives, so that says a lot for my extended family believing in hucksterism. I do believe that animals, especially our pets, dogs, have a spirit and hopefully will meet us in Heaven. Not sure about Cats, but we’ll see, I’ve known a few nice ones, and my granddaughter has two.

That it what our faith is all about. Our Lord Jesus gave himself to cleanse mans sins. We were created in God’s image so he could be here and live through us. How cool is that! Live by his word and rest your soul with him is all we are asked. Our souls will be saved and we will spend eternity in all mighty heaven. I pray all living animals have a soul. I know when I look into animals eyes I see one. My faith has guided me in all directions through many different journeys. Some good, some bad. But my faith in God and Jesus has always brought me through. I know one day my time will come and I will answer for my sins. Through my faith I plan to see you all in Heaven.
