Continuing our tribute to Elvis Presley on the 50th Anniversary after his death on August 16, 1977, here’s a special find: an actual letter to a fan he wrote in 1954, very early (on stationary mentioning the Louisiana Hayride) in his career:

I have received your letters and I don’t think your crazy. I understand how you feel because before I started singing I lived in poorest of town and my father made only 45 cents a week. Please try to understand that I can not do what you ask it would not be the right thing to do. Also someday you will be glad I didn’t. There is somebody out in this world that’s meant for you and you only with him only will you find your happiness.

I don’t love you and I doubt I ever could so please let’s be friends and let it drop there. You don’t know what kind of life I lead, and the letters I receive so please understand.
