In the aftermath of the second historical flood in a year, I’ve noticed more people out swimming, floating, paddling and wading in the blazing hot Texas Hill Country.

Tons of people are flooding (pun intended) the Guadalupe, Frio, and Medina Rivers under a scorching Sun.
We’ve noted there’s many people with bandages on their faces, ears and arms.
It’s little wonder July is National Melasma Month.

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes brown or gray-brown patches to appear on the face, most often on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. While it’s harmless, Melasma can be frustrating because it often returns—even after it begins to fade.
What Triggers Melasma?
Several every day factors can cause Melasma to develop or become more noticeable, including:
Sun Exposure
Ultraviolet (UV) rays are the leading trigger for Melasma. Even short periods of unprotected sun exposure can stimulate excess melanin production, causing existing dark patches to deepen or new ones to appear.
Hormonal Changes
Pregnancy, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy are all common contributors, which is why Melasma is often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy.”
Heat & Visible Light
It’s not just the sun. Heat from hot weather, exercise, or saunas—as well as visible blue light—may also stimulate pigment-producing cells and contribute to Melasma flare-ups.
Small Daily Habits Can Make a Big Difference
Although Melasma can’t always be prevented, protecting your skin every day can help reduce flare-ups and keep discoloration from worsening.

- Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day—and remember to reapply every two hours when outdoors.
- Choose a tinted mineral sunscreen with iron oxide, which helps protect against visible light that can worsen Melasma.
- Add extra protection with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and shade whenever possible.

Consistency is key. Daily sun protection is one of the most effective ways to manage Melasma over time.
