Frugal Living: Important Things Rise to the Surface

“To live with less, so that the truly important things in life may rise to the surface. To enjoy the freedom of travel and America’s liberty. To live minimally, but meaningfully. To live simply, but fully. To Live in Christ.”

This is our Clever Journeys Creed since day one and we live accordingly. In 2020 (you remember that year, don’t you?), we decided to get out of the proverbial “rat race” by living simply, retiring away from any big city and  worship God.

Here are some of our best proven ideas that will help anyone simplify.

  • Meal planning and batch cooking can save you hundreds of dollars each month.
  • A no-spend challenge can help reveal costly habits and jumpstart your savings. For just one month, no frills, dining out, impulse buying, and stay close to home. You will be pleasantly amazed.
  • Canceling unused subscriptions is an easy way to trim your budget.
  • Buying second-hand and upcycling can help you furnish your home for less.
  • Small changes in energy usage can lead to significant savings over time.
  • The 30-day rule curbs impulse spending and helps you focus on actual needs.
  • Making your household products is cost-effective and eco-friendly.
  • Loyalty programs and cashback apps reward you for everyday purchases.
  • Minimalist living reduces clutter and can lead to significant savings.
  • Public resources like libraries and parks offer free entertainment options.
  • Bartering and trading skills with neighbors can help you meet your needs without spending money.
  • Having clear financial goals keeps you motivated and on track.

Oh, it is true. One of the best ways we have improved our lives is avoiding any TV. None. We do watch a DVD (at our awesome library–checked out) or go to a matinee movie 25 miles away, a few time per year.

  1. By what you need. Save up and buy what you want. I’ve gone back to using cash only for 90% of buying power in stores. I only use ecommerce if I can’t find it in a store. I go to the bank once a week for cash. Unless something does come up such as car maintenance, buying large items then I use debt card. Credit card for emergencies and hotel and some trips once a year. I have an American Account so I transfer every pay period and use cash in the states only. The dollar rate for us is Holy crapola. Still believe it or not I made a large order through AutoZone to buy some car and truck supplies such as filters, spark plugs. The price in american dollars converted to Canadian is still far cheaper than buying it in Canada.

I always bring my own coffee on the road, don’t buy sweets or treats. Buy bulk separate freeze and use vaccum sealer. I go to the Costco business and buy restaraunt bulk: cheeses, hams, salami, smoked meats they use in restaurants large cans of tomatoes, kidney beans etc. I have a deli meat slicer and spend a weekend slicing, separating and freeze it all. There’s only 2 of us. I save loads this way. Four different size freezers and a large vegetable garden with fruit trees and berries. I go in large batches with crockpots, a different sizes of insta pots. Every few years I’ll order a hind quarter of beef, side of pork. Go to local farmers for eggs. Lots of ways to save. It’s the freedom of the will and working hard. It won’t suprise me if the elites are strategically planning another 1929 depression. It’s all that is left because everything else failed trying to bring down MAGA. In fact I’d be surprised if it didn’t happen.

    • You are seriously a hero in my eyes. I prefer the US cash thing only & make exceptions similar to your criteria. We live on 48% (we literally calculated it) than we did in 2020 & that is with EVERY THING going up in price. People would think we are serious preppers if they saw our garden, hoarding, mason jars, etc. Thank you.
