THESE ARE ACTUAL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED BY “THOMAS COOK VACATIONS” FROM DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS:

- “They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax.”
- “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”
- “We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”
- “We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”
- “The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room.”
- “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow.”
- “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallartato close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time — this should be banned.”
- “No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”
- “Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”
- “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.”
- “The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun.”
- “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.”
- “I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends’ three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller.”
- “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the resort.’ We’re trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service.”
- “When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”
- “We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”
- “It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel.”
- “I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes.”
- “My fiancée and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.”

People. Think. Like. This.??? No wonder we’re in the mess we’re in. I have to read this over again, and try to unstun myself.

Sometimes it is better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open one’s mouth or write and remove all doubt.

As for #2, I did not have a problem when I went to Goa about 10 years ago and I have a problem with spicy food. I ate well and loved a nearby fish restaurant. I went there often during my week stay. The food at the hotel was good too.

Umm ~ While shaking my head in disbelief, I realized most, if not all of these ‘dissatisfieds’ are European. Many years ago, my dream job was working as a Nurse on tall ships/sailing vessels in the Caribbean for Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. Thankfully, the majority of our passengers were American or Canadian with the occasional Scandinavian or European passenger or crew member. It didn’t take long to ‘get it’ that Europeans live in their own little worlds, even while ‘on holiday’ (vacation in American English). Imagine their confusion when one of our ports-of-call was the island of St. Martin/St. Maarten, half French, half Dutch, and both with a Caribbean flair. Each side maintained their own dialect, currency and cuisine, which caused many of the European travelers to have an absolute meltdown. I suppose being exposed to two different cultures – really three with the Caribbean influence – on one island was too much for them to handle. Yet they, Brits especially, have no problem looking down their noses at A-mericans. I think it must have something to do with us escaping tyranny and forming our own country, the good ol’ USofA, all those many years ago. Don’t you think that’s a long time to hold a grudge? 😊🇺🇸

P.S. I love curry, and many of the islands offered exceptional curry dishes. Conch fritters were also a delicious delicacy!

That’s a revelation. I did see that some of the comments were distinctly English, but assumed the rest were Americans! Maybe I’m wrong; that would be great.
It’s true; the Brits, or some of them, do still look at us as rebellious upstarts. Maybe they’ll grow up, or maybe they like their rut, but in England it’s been harder to stay in one lately. The world has invaded their island.

P.S. That’s so cool that you got to be a nurse on the tall ships!

Ya know, it really was an adventure. Growing up, my family often visited the Texas coast/Gulf of Mexico, so I’ve always loved the ocean & wanted to be a Pirate when I grew up! I guess working on these beautiful barquentine ships and visiting so many gorgeous islands was the closest I could get. 😊
There were 7 ships in the fleet and several were former luxury yachts owned by folks like the Vanderbilts and Onassis, of course converted into multi-passenger cruise ships.
There were challenges like the occasional unruly passenger or no access to decent medical care, but overall it was the experience of a lifetime and I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. I met people from all over the world and was blessed to do and see many things most people never get the chance to. 🌴🌎
Now I get to live out my retirement years in the incredible Texas Hill Country with Jack and our pup Mr. Beefy. Ahhhh ~ it’s so easy to breathe and relax out here!
We love hearing from you regularly and pray all’s well with you our friend. 💜
