Is Sugar Addiction Controlling You?

5 Questions for the Person That Thinks They May be Addicted to Sugar

Sugar addiction: whether you are actually “addicted” or not, it’s the feeling of wanting something sweet that you try to ignore until it nags you enough to “cave in” and eat what you were trying to avoid.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you “binge” on the food you were trying to avoid, but it’s when you finally break down and have it and then feel guilty afterward. Or you beat yourself up for not being able to resist.

If that sounds like something you wrestle with sometimes, here are 5 “key questions” to consider to help you be able to relax around your favorite foods instead of trying to rigidly control yourself.

Do you notice that the tendency to yearn for food you are craving happens on a regular basis?

If you notice a ‘rhythm’ to your cravings, this is a sign that there’s something your body, emotions, mind, or spirit is needing.

Maybe you need more healthy fat in your diet, for instance. Eating fruit or common breakfast cereals (carbs) is a quick way to give your body sugar because it’s a food that your body processes quickly.

Sometimes the craving for sugar (or refined carbs) is the body’s way of indicating it needs something. It’s showing up as a craving for sugar or carbs, which is the body’s way of getting a quick hit of energy.

Do you have enough fat in your diet? If you tend to eat a low fat diet, your brain and body may be hankering for fat.

Or perhaps it’s something else. Dairy products can be addictive as well, for instance. Or you may be missing a certain mineral in your diet. Our bodies change over time. So things you may not have needed then, you may be lacking now.

If you have cravings and can’t seem to let them go, even when you know it will lead to feeling guilty or bad after ‘caving in’, it’s something to consider. If it happens regularly, it’s a good sign that your brain probably formed a habit.

Answering these 5 questions can give you insight into your sugar cravings, whether you think you’re a ‘sugar addict’ or not. Gaining awareness is the first big leap into being able to find a solution.

  1. I don’t think you can eliminate all sugar from your diet. There is a lot of corn syrup in different foods. Honey is a great substitute.

For years I had painful cramps in my calf muscles. Back in 2012, I stopped putting sugar in my tea and within 24 hours I had no more cramps in my calf muscles. I notice that whenever I drink something or eat something that has a lot of sugar in it, then I do get cramps somewhere in my body. If I drink or eat something with a lot of sugar in it, then I try to drink a lot of water to dilute the sugar.

I have heard that brown sugar or raw sugar is better for you than table sugar.

  2. I found that eliminating white sugar from the house was very helpful. So now there’s raw sugar, unbleached granulated for baking, blackstrap molasses, and raw honey. The more dark greens I ate, the less I craved sugar, and limiting the amount of starchy carbs in a day helped balance the cravings, too. I haven’t gotten those blood sugar swings in a very long time, and I don’t crave desserts very often, so The Maker’s Diet must be on to something. When I do want a dessert, I go whole hog. The weird thing is, now I don’t even want very much of it! Example: I have made 3 homemade layer cakes for various occasions in the last few weeks, you know, rich, loaded with buttercream frosting, and had a piece of them myself. That was enough; the rest went to the neighbors, everybody was happy. Confession: the frosting was regular confectioner’s sugar. But the trick is, if your nutrient levels and sugar are balanced, you are okay with a nice helping and done. I think my real downfall is….pasta! But I’m working on it. Greens help.
