Favorite California Detour: San Francisco to Big Sur

Some of our best physical and literal adventures in life have been because of detours.

Undoubtedly, the United States of America is blessed with countless picturesque towns and landscapes.

If you have never tried it, sometimes the most memorable getaways are the ones where you step away from the crowds by taking a detour destination.

Big Sur is one such marvelous detour destination in the US. California’s rugged coastline meets the Pacific Ocean here. This creates some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the country.

Big Sur offers a myriad of hidden beaches and panoramic viewpoints. Our recommendation is to drive the famous Pacific Coast Highway when visiting.

Along the way, you can stop to stroll a few of the most pristine beaches in America. Then, catch an epic sunset snap at Bixby Creek Bridge or Pfeiffer Beach’s Keyhole Arch.

Another excellent attraction is the outstanding Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is especially great for families visiting with children. Guests have the chance to watch and meet some of the aquatic wildlife on show.

  1. Detour Destination. Love it. We lived in Monterey (the 3rd time) from 2002-2017, mostly while I was working at the Defense Language Institute, from which I graduated twice while active duty USAF (1978 and 1984). We loved living there because of the beauty of the place. You have barely touched the surface of the attractions along the PCH. But yes, Big Sur is well worth the ‘detour’ and the Aquarium is world class.
