America: In God We Trust

When George Washington became the first president of the United States in 1789, he addressed the nation in his inaugural speech.

In that speech he said:

“No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States.”

Washington openly credited God’s providence for the founding and success of the nation. He also called on Americans to recognize that the country’s future depended on moral virtue and divine guidance.

In other words:

America’s first president publicly acknowledged that the nation’s success depended on God’s direction and blessing.
