Dodie surprised me with two matinee tickets for us to see a surprisingly good movie in Kerrville, Texas Thursday afternoon. I give it 9.2 out of 10 rating.
Last winter we taught a two-part Bible Study class on God’s influence on the founding of America. This was particularly enjoyed when considering the current narrative being presented by media and politics our nation faces.

CinemaScore, a marketing firm that polls movie theatergoers, awarded “A Great Awakening” an A+ rating, only the 135th movie to receive that rating. The polls attempt to gauge how a film’s audiences like the movie.
After a quiet theatrical release, the movie is turning heads with its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Written and directed by Joshua Enck, the film follows the unlikely friendship between Benjamin Franklin and Reverend George Whitefield, and the latter’s impact during the Great Awakening religious movement, which turned out to be one of the most defining moments in American history.
That time in history was โone of the most formative moments in American history, uniting generations around the belief that true liberty is found only in Jesus Christ. This story is more than history. Itโs a reminder that God can change the world through the work of willing heartsโand we believe He will do it again,โ the Sight & Sound CEO Joshua Enck said.

โThis story really found us,โ he revealed. โItโs not that I had aspirations as a young child to do a film on George Whitefield. But when I started diving into the 250th anniversary and the concept of liberty, I found this incredible friendship.โ
โThey were a team,โ the CEO continued. โFranklin was the greatest promoter of the greatest event in American history. There were many preachers leading up to 1776, but there were none like Whitefield, and when you combined the power of his voice with Franklinโs ability to get the word out, it unified the colonies.โ
Getting the chance to explain the biblical definition of liberty attracted Enck to the project.
โOn the Liberty Bell, it says, โProclaim liberty throughout all the land and to all the inhabitants thereof.โ I want that liberty to ring out over this nation once again in the hearts of men and women,โ Enck said.
โThe biblical definition of liberty,โ he added, โis that blood was already shed for us, freedom from sin so that we can serve the Lord freely. This film doesnโt shy away from the Gospel. We donโt soft-shoe anything.โ

The film focuses on Franklin and Whitefieldโs need for a savior.
โWe show the flaws of Ben Franklin. We show the flaws of George Whitefield,โ Enck explained. โGod uses imperfect leaders to transform the world. Thatโs what happened in the Great Awakening.โ
โWe need something that brings us back together as a nation,โ he added. โThis film doesnโt have a political agenda. Weโre not trying to prove whether every founding father was a Christian. Weโre simply telling how this powerful friendship ignited an awakening.โ

I would love to get to see this movie; the story of this friendship is so great. I have this gut feeling that we are going to get to see Ben Franklin in Heaven, in spite of himself. George Whitefield’s prayers wouldn’t go unanswered.
