What People Pay For Cars Owned by Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Janis Joplin & Keith Richards

Elvis Presley’s Rolls Royce: $396,000

Many people in the auction world thought $396,000 for a 1963 Rolls Royce Phantom V touring limousine formerly owned by Elvis Presley was one heck of a deal considering some of the other prices on this list.  However, this car sold at auction in 2014 for 32 percent more than its original $300,000 estimate. Among the notable modifications Presley had done to the car: a Blaupunkt Koln radio, air conditioning and a bar.

John Lennon’s Painted Rolls Royce: $2,299,000

In late 1964, John Lennon purchased a matte black Rolls Royce. In 1966, the car suffered some damage during the filming of How I Won the War, starring Lennon, and thus the Beatle decided to have the car repainted every color imaginable.

When the psychedelic vehicle went up for auction in 1985, five years after Lennon’s death, it fetched a whopping $2,299,000. The buyer was Canadian businessman Jim Pattison, and the car now resides at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, British Columbia.

Janis Joplin’s Painted Porsche: $1.76 Million

It was Janis Joplin who once sang about her friends all driving Porsches, begging the Lord to buy her a Mercedes Benz. But in reality, Joplin did own a Porsche herself, paying one of her roadies $500 to jazz up the exterior in bright colors and psychedelic designs.

From 1973 to 2015 the car was owned by Joplin’s siblings, and was displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum for 20 years. It then went for $1.76 million at auction.

Keith Richards’ ‘Blue Lena’ Bentley: $1,186,133

Named for singer Lena Horne, Keith Richards’ 1965 Bentley, “Blue Lena” was a vehicle of seduction and revelry.

“It was a car meant to be driven fast at night,” he wrote in his 2010 autobiography, Life. “Having this car was already heading for trouble, breaking the rules of the establishment, driving a car I was definitely not born in to. ‘Blue Lena’ had carried us on many an acid-fueled journey.” In 2015, it sold for $1,186,133 at auction.
