Targeting Road Rage

The number one rule which you must follow in any driving situation or emergency is do not panic.

Drivers who react to an unexpected danger in blind panic usually make the situation worse.

Always take a moment to think and react in a considered way.

In many ways, highways are among the safest roadways in the United States. Unfortunately, “high-speed” in itself equates to “high-risk”.

Despite all that has been done to protect motorists using these roadways, traveling at high-speed increases certain dangers. For instance, driving at a high speed will:

  • Make spotting potential hazards more difficult
  • Increase the time it takes for a driver to stop and the distance covered in that time
  • Increase the severity of any collisions or accidents which occur

Intentionally Bothering Other Drivers

Now this one incorporates such things as tailgating, passing on the right side or in a no passing zone, obscene gestures–how the driver behaves.

Are they not only honking at the driver in front of them, but also shouting obscene words?

These are things to look out for, and be especially prepared for.

Because aggressive drivers like this are not only using their vehicles to intimidate others, but attacking them personally.

One example of the former is ‘brake checking,’ where an aggressive driver will force another vehicle to stop by pulling their car deliberately in front of them.

  1. I see road rage daily in Granbury. A few days ago, the turn lane into Walmart was full of cars, so a pickup, instead of going through the light and taking the next turn, decided to block the entire lane by pulling in sideways to make the turn. Now, I know Walmart is important to many folks and they must get there as fast as they can, but this was too much for another pickup driver. A young man in a “rat truck” proceeded to push the offender sideways with his crappy truck, not worrying if it damaged the nice one. The driver of the offending truck, got out and confronted the young man, who got out of his truck and slugged the other guy which resulted in a good ole’ Texas fistfight. This town can be darn entertaining at times.
