6.2 Million People Camped for the First Time
Kampgrounds of America’s (KOA) independent, non-biased research of the North American camper, the 2023 North American Camping & Outdoor Hospitality Report takes a holistic look at outdoor hospitality and its importance in travel.
Camping incidence has grown significantly over the past decade and now anchors about one-third (32%) of the leisure travel market.
With campers spending over $52 billion in local communities last year, outdoor hospitality and camping are a formidable part of leisure travel that are examined in depth in their report.
Here are some quick highlights:
2023 NORTH AMERICAN CAMPING & OUTDOOR HOSPITALITY REPORT
- In 2022, 92 million American households identified as campers and 58 million households camped at least once last year.
- Still well ahead of pre-COVID-19 figures, more than 6.4 million households camped for the first time in 2022.
- Campers spent an additional $19 per day on travel expenses year-over-year and spend more than other travelers in local areas – in total campers spent $52 billion in local communities.
- More than half (56%) of RVers plan to use their RV more or the same amount in the face of an economic downturn pointing to the resiliency of the activity.
- Year-to-year, around 80% of campers try a new form of camping they are unfamiliar with. In 2023, campers want to travel for natural events (40%) and food tourism and culinary experiences (36%).

Camping is great, and there sure are a lot of ways to do it. Planning on a big trip camping this year: all the way out to the Island out back with a tent, food, wood and lights. But, I think about a little camper for the road….

I didn’t know a thing about KOA, so that’s a keeper article if I ever do get a little camper! Or, just go with the tent, as usual. Love camping!

Well, old cheap me thinks they can be a bit too expensive. I’ve camped in many over the years, but then again I remember when hamburgers, hot dogs, a restaurant meals, etc. were a small fraction of the price they are today.

Camping is wonderful. I grew up with lots of camping trips, and we continued them with our own children. But now… I have not been camping in many years for several reasons. 58M is a lot of camping.

Yes, we bought a tent a few years ago & have been out camping sense. Found out that at my age, I’m not the camper I used to be.
