Lessons in Success From Roger Staubach

Roger Staubach was born on February 5, 1942, in Ohio. As of February 2024, his net worth is estimated to exceed $600 million.

Staubach’s successful and lucrative life can be categorized into two distinct eras, with his athletic career paving the way for success as a businessman and investor.

  • 1963: While playing for the Navy, Staubach wins several awards and trophies, picking up the Maxwell Award for leading the Midshipmen.
  • 1969: After being drafted several years before, he makes his debut as a rookie for the Dallas Cowboys.
  • 1980: Staubach retires from football with the highest career passer rating at that time.
  • 1996: Reflecting on his service, the Navy bestows Staubach its Lone Sailor Award.
  • 2018: US President Donald Trump awards Staubach the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the first player to receive the award.

Although I have never interviewed Staubach one-on-one in a sit-down setting, I was fortunate enough to be part of a press team covering one of his success presentations in Dallas and an informal appearance he and coach Tom Landry made to raise funds at an event in San Antonio in the early and mid 1990s.

Lessons

Here are 3 key lessons for success from Staubach.

1. Never Underestimate The Importance of Teamwork

Staubach has been a vocal advocate for teamwork throughout his career as a football player and a businessman.

While it’s possible to accomplish great things as an individual, collaborating with others opens up far more opportunities.

2. Trust the People Close To You

Whether you’re playing football or running a business, you need to know you can trust the people close to you to do the right thing.

When everyone performs their part, you can trust them to have your back and look out for your best interests.

3. Take Good Advice Seriously, But Trust Your Instincts

Early in his career, Staubach received plenty of advice from his coach and others with experience, but he didn’t let them guide his path through life.

Take the good elements from the advice you receive, but trust your instincts when it comes to making big decisions.

Notable Quotes

  • “Football teaches you hard work. It takes a lot of unspectacular preparation to have spectacular results in both business and football.
  • “There’s always something special when the service academies play each other that’s not in any other game. This is not a regular game, and everyone involved knows that.
  • “Confidence doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s a result of something… hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.
  • In the commercial real estate business, brokers spearhead major accounts. But they wouldn’t have customers without the people who oversee construction.
  • At a car dealership, the person who sells the car is the hero, and also gets the commission. But if the mechanics don’t service that car well, the customer won’t return.

  1. Roger Staubach is a class act. That’s a fabulous image you have posted of him passing in midair. If you scroll down to the bottom of “My Pro Sports Archives” page on my website, there’s a routine picture I took of him while passing. 🙂
