Happy Birthday to the Master of Suspense, Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock!

Born August 13, 1899, Alfred Hitchcock directed more than 50 films over six decades, redefining the thriller genre, inventing ground-breaking film techniques and pushing narrative boundaries, leaving audiences filled with fear, terror, tension and surprise.

Hitchcock’s films explored psychological depth with intertwined emotions of guilt, obsession and desire, crafting complex characters that dealt in moral ambiguity, often blurring the conventional lines between heroes and villains.

The director undeniably earned his nickname, turning suspense into a true art form. From Rebecca and Rear Window to Vertigo and Psycho, viewers remained on the edges of their seats, with twists that left them guessing until the very last frame.

Hitchcock’s influence on the film industry changed the course of cinema, and on his 127th birthday, his legacy lives on in theaters around the world.

Ingrid Bergman starred in three Alfred Hitchcock films: Spellbound, Notorious and Under Capricorn.

Bergman said that Hitchcock gave her life-changing advice while working together. “I said, ‘I don’t think I can give you that kind of emotion.’ And he [Hitchcock] sat there and said, ‘Ingrid, fake it!’ Well, that was the best advice I’ve had in my whole life, because in all the years to come there were many directors who gave me what I thought were quite impossible instructions and many difficult things to do, and just when I was on the verge of starting to argue with them, I heard his voice coming to me through the air saying, ‘Ingrid, fake it!’ It saved a lot of unpleasant situations and waste of time.”
