Thanks for this. One problem, however, is that I often read of surveys where basic questions about the faith are totally whiffed. It is almost as bad as the surveys on Americans’ views of how government works (exposing how badly our education system has failed us).

Good question. My take is similar to yours; i.e., most are lukewarm. As you also commented, some think wearing a cross is the ticket; and some think they are Christians because their parents are, or that going to church makes them a Christian, or ‘doing good’ or ‘being good’; or repeating a ‘sinner’s prayer.’ My belief/understanding is that a heartfelt repentance, a true belief/faith/trust in and love for the one true God of the Universe and in His only Son Yeshua, and a continuing profession/repentant heart are the qualifying factors. in The End, only He knows who are His and who are not.
I find it hard to believe there are 219M true Christians in the USA. Scripture speaks of narrow gates/paths and remnants and there is the whole ‘depart from me I never knew you’ thing.
