César Chávez Day Cancellations Spark Controversy Across the US

César Chávez Day celebrations are held in many parts of the United States. It is a state holiday in California. It is an optional holiday in states such as Colorado and Texas. Other states where celebrations and various activities occur in honor of César Chávez include Arizona, Michigan, Nebraska and New Mexico.

This past week, suddenly many cities are canceling parades, picnics, programs and activities usually held in Chavez’s honor.

Deputy City Manager Maria Villagómez sent a memo to members of the San Antonio City Council. In it, she communicated a cancellation to city officials in San Antonio, Texas.

The memo explained that organizers had canceled the event. This was due to a “sensitive matter.” It involved possible upcoming disclosures about Chávez’s past.

The memo also stated that leaders connected to the California-based César Chávez Foundation had warned organizers. They said that negative information about Chávez would soon appear in media. Clever Journeys has discovered the New York Times, a woke, left leaning media company, would indeed be releasing some damning knowledge.

Here is the response from the foundation:

The 25th Corpus Christi César Chávez March, scheduled for March 28, 2026, has been cancelled “due to sensitive issues.”

The cancellation mirrors similar decisions in San Francisco, Houston, El Paso, and other locations across the nation.

Organizers say the cancellations are also being encouraged by the César Chávez Foundation.

President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan was inspired by Chavez’s rallying cries in the fields. As President, Obama went on to proclaim March 31 as the national Cesar Chavez Day.

Republican Assemblyman Carl DeMaio of San Diego, had observations about Chavez’s stance on illegal immigration.

“During his life, Cesar Chavez spoke out against illegal immigration while affirming legal immigration,” DeMaio said. “He was a strong voice for the Latino community and Latino workers in our country while also holding concerns and opposing illegal immigration. And so I am so thrilled to see my Democratic colleagues rise in support of a civil rights leader, an advocate for the Latino community, farm workers, and someone who is one of the earliest voices opposing illegal immigration and supporting, supporting a secure southern border.”

  1. Yowza! Never thought I’d see the day; but I am truly grateful for this development. I have always thought honoring Chavez was akin to honoring Che Guevara or Mao Tse-tung or Josef Stalin, even.
