Tyler Robinson Arrested as the Assassin of Charlie Kirk

Update: Tyler Robinson, of Utah, 22, has been taken into custody as the murder suspect of Charlie Kirk. His parents and a friend identified him after he confessed to his father.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the individual responsible for killing Charlie Kirk.

Seconds before Kirk was shot

Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason and the FBI are seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating the murderer of Kirk.

Mason indicated the shooter arrived on the campus of Utah Valley University at 11:52 a.m. Authorities then tracked the subject through stairwells and up to and across the roof from where they fired the fatal shot.

People with information have been asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI if they have information and submit photos and videos at https://tips.fbi.gov/digitalmedia/f4507712a3b2893.

The images show a man in a stairwell wearing a black long sleeve shirt with an American flag, jeans, sunglasses and a dark hat.

After the shooting, Mason said officials tracked the shooter’s movements as the suspect moved to the other side of the building, jumped off the roof and fled to a nearby neighborhood.

Officials have been combing through the neighborhood and contacting witnesses, as well as anyone with doorbell cameras, to identify leads.

“We do have good video footage of this individual. We are not going to release that at this time,” Mason said. “We are working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual.”

Law enforcement recovered a Mauser .30 caliber bolt-action rifle hidden in a towel in a wooded area near the university campus along what they suspect to be the shooter’s path as they fled the scene, according to information circulated among law enforcement.

Besides the spent cartridge recovered in the chamber, three other rounds were loaded in the magazine. The weapon and ammunition are being forensically analyzed by law enforcement at a federal lab for clues that could help identify the shooter or the motive.

Kirk, 31, was speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem on 10 September, 2025 as part of his “American Comeback” tour. He sat under a white tent-like gazebo to take questions from a crowd of about 3,000 in the university’s “quad”, an outdoor courtyard.

At about 12:20 pm, he was asked by a member of the crowd selected as the second person in line to address Kirk: “Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?”

Kirk replied: “Too many.”

The questioner noted there had been five in 10 years and asked Kirk how many mass shootings there had been in that time.

“Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk replied.

A single shot was heard, which is believed to have been fired from the roof of the Losee Center, a building overlooking the quad.

Early rumors suggested a sniper shot from 500 yards. That figure has since been corrected: the fatal bullet was fired from the roof of the Losee Center, roughly 200 yards from Kirk’s stage position. That distance matters. A 200-yard shot is considered sharpshooter range, not sniper territory.

Here’s why:

  • Sharpshooter Range (100–400 yards): Achievable with a scoped hunting rifle, common military or law enforcement training, or extensive civilian marksmanship experience.
  • Sniper Range (600–1,200 yards+): Requires elite military training, specialized rifles, and deep knowledge of ballistics, windage, and environmental conditions.

By operating at 200 yards, the shooter widened the pool of potential suspects. The skillset required is advanced but far more common than true sniper expertise. That accessibility makes the killing more unsettling.

The Kill Shot: Why the Neck?

The bullet struck Kirk in the neck/throat area, dropping him within seconds. This wasn’t random, it was a deliberate choice of one of the body’s most lethal target zones. The neck houses the carotid arteries, jugular veins, trachea, and spinal cord. Damage there leads to rapid incapacitation and often immediate death.

  1. I apppreciate the visuals and the information you offered to clarify exactly how this heinous act was carried out. If that’s the hitman in the picture climbing the stairwell to the top of the building, the rifle must have already been in place for him on the roof. Thank you, Jack.
