The Hen’s Nest is Our Favorite Eatery in the Cowboy Capital of the World

The spectacular Texas Hill Country is known for some of the best food anywhere.

We found our happy place for breakfast, brunch or lunch, depending on when we get out of bed.

It is so good, that I have literally laid in bed trying to go to sleep early, imagining what I might order from the fabled creations of owner and cook Sheli Hinton (and an awesome dental hygienist by trade).

Farm-fresh quality and down home hospitality are the hallmarks of the delicious offerings at this cozy, warm restaurant in Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of the World!

The Hen’s Nest is our absolute favorite eatery in this region. The food is consistently fantastic and no matter what we order we are always delighted with our meals!

● I give it my highest rating ever: 9.6 out of a perfect 10.

Last week, Sheli came out of the kitchen to say ‘Hi’ and check on each table. She took the time to sit with us for a moment–to make us laugh and brighten our spirits–when suddenly she grinned as she gazed out the windows.

“Anthony, it’s Anthony,” she sparkled. “He is the namesake of our The Anthony sandwich!”

For fun, we have made it our mission to try something new each time we dine there. Neither of us have experienced The Anthony yet.

It turns out the polite young man, Anthony Verciglio, owner of Reddy Paint in Bandera, presented the idea of a unique sandwich to Sheli some time ago.

Anthony Verciglio

“First, we start with Hawaiian bread, toasted,” he explained. “There is cream cheese with roasted jalapeno, cheddar cheese, bacon and egg. Plus tomato to add some tanginess. It is good. I eat one at least once a week, usually on weekends.

Sheli experimented, perfected, and now proudly includes the third generation painter’s creation on her menu.

The servers are persistently terrific and forever efficient, happy and polite. We make it a point to go at least once a week (but often more) and can’t wait to return. Dodie and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hen’s Nest to anyone looking for somewhere to eat in this beautiful neck of the woods.

After living in this area almost five years (we passed it by so many times and even parked in the shared parking lot when we took Mr. Beefy in for dog grooming), we didn’t try it until last summer.

Mainly, because of their limited days open, we just never stopped until they expanded their workweek. Now, we are addicted and bypass the more touristy restaurants for Sheli’s creative down home grub.

Currently open 5 days a week, it is now easier to get a table, but first timers should note that the restaurant can get busy on the weekend, so it’s best to arrive early or after lunch. They close at 3 pm.

Each time we dine, the whole experience, from start to finish is great.

● The staff work as a team and everyone is always so friendly and kind.

● The food can’t get better and the prices are fair for the portion size.

● It is consistently a good spot to enjoy fresh and awesome food.

We legitimately believe it is the best restaurant around Bandera. It doesn’t matter what we order, we end up loving it.
