Are Merle Haggard’s ‘Fighting Side of Me’ Lyrics Appropriate For Today?

During the height of the Vietnam War, Country Music legend Merle Haggard released a song in January 1970 that he recorded the month before.

I’ve heard some people say the song is appropriate for today.

“I didn’t like all those destructive riots that those hired leftists and groups held in 2020, before that sham election,” an angry cowboy said at a table in the John Wayne memorable dining room of Old Spanish Trail (OST) Restaurant in Bandera, Texas recently.

Another diner agreed, emphasizing the Haggard lyrics, “…walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me
Runnin’ down the way of life our fightin’ men have fought and died to keep…”

For the table of six, the breakfast discussion centered around the deliberate dangerous actions of the Biden Administration’s defiance of protecting the Texas border from his illegal alien intrusion.

“This (2024) election better be a good one, a more honest one,” a third cowboy, moving foward in his chair, offered, “Because if this crap doesn’t stop we don’t have much choice. They are walkin’ on the fighting side of us. America and our way of life is at stake.”

Haggard’s song, a big hit, was actually nominated for Song of the Year and Single of the Year by theย Country Music Association. The song did not win either award. Haggard wasn’t too dissapointed because the Single of the Year actually went to him for the preceding song, “Okie from Muskogee,” another patriotic monster hit.

Here are the lyrics to Fighting Side of Me:

I hear people talkin’ bad
About the way we have to live here in this country
Harpin’ on the wars we fight
An’ gripin’ ’bout the way things oughta be

An’ I don’t mind ’em switchin’ sides
An’ standin’ up for things they believe in
When they’re runnin’ down my country, man
They’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me

Yeah, walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me
Runnin’ down the way of life
Our fightin’ men have fought and died to keep

If you don’t love it, leave it
Let this song I’m singin’ be a warnin’
You’re runnin’ down my country, man
You’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me

I read about some squirrelly guy
Who claims, he just don’t believe in fightin’
An’ I wonder just how long
The rest of us can count on bein’ free

They love our milk an’ honey
But they preach about some other way of livin’
When they’re runnin’ down my country, hoss
They’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me

Yeah, walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me
Runnin’ down the way of life
Our fightin’ men have fought and died to keep

If you don’t love it, leave it
Let this song I’m singin’ be a warnin’
But you’re runnin’ down my country, man
You’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me

1970

Yeah, walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me
Runnin’ down the way of life
Our fightin’ men have fought and died to keep

Yeah if you don’t love it, leave it
Let this song I’m singin’ be a warnin’
And you’re runnin’ down my country, man
You’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me
