Doctor Commits Suicide After Arrested for Child Sexual Exploitation Charges

The former chief of rheumatology at Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare’s Bone & Joint Institute has been found dead, days after he was arrested on child sexual exploitation charges, Connecticut State Police have confirmed.

Magaldi

The 61-year-old Magaldi was among three people who were charged for their roles in “seeking sexual activity with children,” following a joint operation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to local news outlets, police were called to Litchfield, Conn., March 13 after an unresponsive individual was reported.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s office confirmed on Thursday that Magaldi died by suicide from a gunshot wound to the head.

Dr. Magaldi was recently arrested and charged with attempt to commit second-degree sexual assault; attempt to commit illegal sexual contact with a victim under 16; attempt to commit commercial sex abuse with a minor; and interfering with an officer. He was released March 12 on a $350,000 bond, pending a March 22 court appearance.

Hartford HealthCare placed Dr. Magaldi on administrative leave. In addition to his role at the Bone & Joint Institute, Dr. Magaldi was affiliated with Hartford HealthCare Medical Group; Torrington, Conn.-based Charlotte Hungerford Hospital; and Integrated Care Partners, the system’s physician-led clinical integration organization.

The health system shared an updated statement after Dr. Magaldi’s death, which reads, “The news of the arrest and death of Dr. John Magaldi is deeply troubling. We are ensuring all patients will continue to be cared for, and we are providing support for our colleagues.”

Wilson Suarez, 28, was charged in the operation with criminal attempt at risk of injury – sexual contact with a victim under 16, criminal attempt – sexual assault in the second degree, and criminal attempt/commercial sexual abuse of a minor.

Francisco Carrero, 51, was charged with criminal attempt at risk of injury – sexual contact victim under 16, criminal attempt – sexual assault in the second degree, and criminal attempt/commercial sexual abuse of a minor, and possession of narcotics.

  1. My wife was a career Medical Assistant. She has worked in Family, Pulmonology, and Cardiology practices.

She left one practice to accept different work in another but kept in touch with her former coworkers. One of the doctors in the former practice was fishing with a friend’s son, they were out on a boat, and apparently, he put the moves on this young boy that jumped out of the boat and swam to shore.

The doctor was suspended from practice, other legal complications arose, I’m sure, but he was eventually permitted supervised practice, then, when enough time had elapsed, was permitted unsupervised practice. He was a very good doctor.

The doctor from this article may have been influenced by the sexualization of Children in the media. The doctor from this article sounds like he attempted to act upon his feelings in a more legitimate way, i.e. he didn’t put the moves on a friend’s son nor did he put the moves on a patient (assuming his practice would have him seeing younger patients). Yet, his actions are entirely inappropriate.

I don’t have much to add, other than an awareness of a similar situation, and its stages of action by the medical community in response to that situation. The doctor from this article was charged with an Attempt to Commit these crimes, it sounds like a Sting, or a willful luring of the doctor into a situation that would have been illegal had it been carried out. I’m a little uncomfortable with Stings.

It’s unfortunate that he chose the course of action that he did. I think we all agree that adults being sexually involved with children is inappropriate, but many of the details are missing here. Some Police, likewise, have been involved sexually with Children, one young woman was on a program where she accompanied an officer on duty, she wanted to be a Police Officer as a vocation, and due to marital strife and a recently released from jail individual that he feared would be seeking retribution, he raped the under 18 girl accompanying him. Looking for the title of an online article about the Officer I described, I saw that many cops have raped young girls.

I don’t have suggestions. It doesn’t sound like the Doctor was successful, I related the story of another Doctor that tried similar, and see that police engage not only in inappropriate relationships, but patently illegal ones involving force. It shows a preoccupation with sex with those under 18 that I blame in part on the media, and I think Police, and the Medical Field, may want to address the inappropriate feelings that some of their members seem to harbor.
