The liberal and woke city council of San Antonio, Texas, has approved the spending of $15 million a year to house 400 homeless people in a Holiday Inn on the western edge of downtown.

So far in 2023, over $31 million in municipal bond funding and other federal money has been used to house the homeless there.
A San Antonio police officer, familiar with downtown crime, said, “this all started in 2010, when Heaven For Hope opened and it brought homeless from around the city to be concentrated here. We opened a bicycle police station on Houston Street near the Majestic Theater to help our park rangers around the River Walk.”

“The intent to help the homeless was all well and good, but the result has not gone so great for downtown crime prevention,” he explained. “The area is a magnet for downtown vagrants, and this has resulted in San Antonio now being a destination city for homelessness. Hell, you hear about us being a favorite drop-off for illegals coming in at the border stuffed in the back of trailers every day.”
Taxpayer Benefits
Here is the breakdown of what taxpayers will receive for their money for two years:
โข Nothing. Taxpayers have no benefit other than some relief for tourists and citizens to possibly not be hassled while visiting or working near the Alamo, River Walk, and other local areas.
Citizens trying to enjoy the downtown central library find themselves surrounded by the homeless who spend their days escaping from seasonal weather elements or crime from others.

The downtown region has a substantial problem with drifters, homeless, and gangsters because of the wokeness that permeates Alamo City politics.
Beggars permeate downtown streets concentrating on tourist attractions and busy bus stops.
Homeless Benefits
Here is a breakdown of what the homeless will receive for two years:
โข $8.8 million worth of free rent that taxpayers will pay for to lease the Holiday Inn on West Cesar Chavez Boulevard (formally Durango Street).
โข $7.1 million for San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries (SAMM) to operate the shelter for 400 residents beginning Thanksgiving 2023.
The hotel currently has 313 rooms that will be converted into a 200-room, “low-barrier homeless shelter,” where residents will not be required to be sober to stay there.

A Days Inn motel near the Alamo has become a homeless shelter with only a 44% success rate of moving residents into more permanent supportive housing. Additional tax funds were necessary to install fencing and a security gate around that property.
“Since this Holiday Inn was used by Haven for Hope (another multimillion dollar program less than two miles away to house homeless) for roughly two-and-a-half years during the pandemic to help with social-distancing, it’s an idea attractor for more homeless,” the officer explained. “But again, this perpetuates more vagrants and crime to this area.”

Earler this year, SAMMS received $18 million from Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and additional taxpayer funds from a city housing bond.
National Benefits
Across the nation, Holiday Inns have been used as shelter residents in many states to deal with illegal immigrants and the homeless.
โข A week ago, Holiday Inn LAX–owned by a subsidiary of Chinese firm Esong Group–began hiring immigrants to run their hotel shelter.
โข Project Hospitality, the nonprofit with a $5.3 million contract to run the Holiday Inn Express migrant shelter in Staten Island, is dealing with a dozen migrant families scammed out of thousands of dollars. An employee of the shelter promised them leases and furniture in newly renovated apartments that did not exist.

In South Burlington, Vermont, police and firefighters were called to a Holiday Inn (used as a shelter) because a resident set his pet on fire. Police Chief Shawn Burke announced that Dujuan Williams, 26, had been charged with aggravated animal cruelty and arson in connection with the incident.

The Biden Administration, through Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, has used many of their Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents to secure hotels for thousands of illegal aliens throughout the United States.
Texas, Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, and California have especially experienced increased crime as the migrants continued to be shipped to local hotels. This crime wave is spreading across the United States as the border invasion increases.

Two things have increased crime in our community – building a prison and opening a homeless shelter, even though these were marketed to the public as beneficial.

Maybe what these policies are really doing is enabling, instead of getting people on their feet? Well intentioned but destructive. My mind reels at this mess.

The majority of homeless are homeless by choice. Avenues to better themselves have been unselfishly provided for decades provided they stay clean and sober. They refuse to do that. I guess they’ve finally hit the lottery with mentally ill Leftists in charge.
