Grandma Drank Her Coffee a Particular Way, 60 Years Later I Think I Know Why

My first memories of my Grandpa Jack and Grandma Mildred Dennis were of them drinking morning coffee. They both always drank their coffee like this! I thought it was because it was too hot.

Do you remember older generations drinking from their saucer?

Recently I came across this poem that made me feel there was symbolism to their coffee ritual.

Drinking from My Saucer
by John Paul Moore

I’ve never made a fortune and it’s probably too late now.
But I don’t worry about that much, I’m happy anyhow.
And as I go along life’s way, I’m reaping better than I sowed.
I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
I don’t have a lot of riches, and sometimes the going’s tough.
But I’ve got loved ones around me, and that makes me rich enough.
I thank God for his blessings, and the mercies He’s bestowed.
I’m drinking from my saucer, ’Cause my cup has overflowed.
I remember times when things went wrong, my faith wore somewhat thin.
But all at once the dark clouds broke, and the sun peeped through again.
So God, help me not to gripe about the tough rows that I’ve hoed.
I’m drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.
If God gives me strength and courage, when the way grows steep and rough.
I’ll not ask for other blessings, I’m already blessed enough.
And may I never be too busy, to help others bear their loads.
Then I’ll keep drinking from my saucer, ‘Cause my cup has overflowed.

  1. That is so cool. When I was about 7 yrs old my grandmother let me and my brother drink coffee from a saucer just like them. On a farm in Indiana. Never thought nothing of it. Those were good times!

  2. I never saw anybody do it, probably because my parents were raised near or around city areas where things tend to change from old ways. I bet if I asked her, that my Mom would say that her grandparents in Kingston, Maine, drank from their saucers; they were old farm people, where you had to walk 70 feet out to the outhouse on cold winter nights. By the way, Mom is being redpilled by a neighbor, and it’s working! Just to show God can do anything you ask Him. She’s gonna be fierce: a warrior!

  3. I don’t recall this habit; but knowing my mother and grandmother, it would be to not waste anything even spilled coffee. In fact, they said spilled coffee was bad luck which I have to live with daily among their other superstitions.
