Just 847 years ago today, August 9th, construction began on the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

In 1831, William Driver of Salem, Massachusetts, was looking at the American flag with pride. The next morning he woke up and became the first to use the term “Old Glory” in connection with the large flag aboard his ship, the Charles Daggett.

In 1910, on this day, the first complete, self-contained electric washing machine is patented.

The first appearance of the animated character Betty Boop (“Dizzy Dishes”) occurred in 1930.

Fictional character Smokey Bear (“Only you can prevent forest fires”) created by US Forest Service and the Ad Council was announced in 1944.

In 1935, Senator Huey Long was assassinated by Carl Weiss in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Years later, when the case was reopened, it was found that he was accidentally shot to death by his own bodyguards, who had opened fire on Carl Weiss when he pulled out his gun.

Babe Ruth believed that his birthday was on February 7, 1894. However, when he applied for a passport on this date, he looked up his birth certificate and found his birthday listed as February 6, 1895, nearly a full year later than he thought. 

People often assume that the first Europeans to settle in the United States came with the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, MA, in ships sailed from England in 1620. However Spanish explorers had been in the Southwest for almost a century by that time, and in 1610 began building the ‘Palace of the Governers’ in Santa Fe, already a thriving settlement.

The Censored Eleven is a list of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies cartoons that in 1968 were deemed too offensive for public consumption. They have not been broadcast on TV since then, and aside from one screening in 2010 at a film festival, they have never received any official release by Warner Bros. 

The original fax machine, the “Electric Printing Telegraph” was patented in 1843 by Scottish inventor Alexander Bain, the same year that about 1,000 people set off West for Oregon, forming a huge wagon train on what is now known as the Oregon trail. This set the tone for Westward expansion in the USA, and is the beginning of the ‘Great Migration.’
