In 1956, a New Jersey steamfitter and former Marine named Thomas Fitzpatrick pulled off one of the wildest bar bets in New York history.

After bragging in a Manhattan bar that he could get from New Jersey to the city in just 15 minutes, he walked out, made his way to Teterboro Airport, jumped into a single-engine plane, and took off without lights, radio, or permission.

Flying through the night sky, he navigated purely by instinct and landed the aircraft right on St. Nicholas Avenue directly in front of the same bar where the dare began.
