Japan has been producing timber for 700 years without cutting down trees. In the 14th century, an extraordinary daisugi technique was born in Japan.

Daisugi predicted that these trees would be planted for future generations. They would not be cut down but trimmed as if they were giant bonsai trees. By applying this technique to conscious wood, the timber could be obtained uniformly straight and without knots.

It would be practically perfect for construction. Cutting is the art of allowing trees to grow and germinate using their wood, without ever cutting it down. That’s an amazing technique.

The “awesome double sycamore” in Pittsburgh PA is a pair of sycamore trees that were planted in the 1930s and trained to grow together to form an archway over the walkway. The trees are a local landmark often used for photos.
