Bobby Rydell Had 34 Billboard Hot Music Hits

Born Robert Louis Ridarelli on April 26, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bobby Rydell was the quintessential South Philly kid who turned neighborhood charm into national stardom.

He was discovered as a teen on American Bandstand. The iconic show was hosted by his neighbor Dick Clark.

After this discovery, he quickly became one of the biggest teen idols of the early 1960s. He had a string of hits that captured the energy and innocence of the era.

With his smooth vocals and boy-next-door charisma, Bobby scored 34 Billboard Hot 100 hits. This achievement placed him among the Top 5 artists of his time.

His breakout smash “Wild One” (1960) became his signature anthem—a joyful, rebellious burst of rhythm that still ignites dance floors today.

Other classics followed: the breezy “Swingin’ School,” the infectious “The Cha-Cha-Cha,” the heartfelt “We Got Love” (1959), and the bittersweet “Forget Him” (1964)—his final Top 10 hit.

He also brought his star power to the big screen. He played teen heartthrob Hugo Peabody in the 1963 musical film Bye Bye Birdie. He stood alongside Ann-Margret and Dick Van Dyke. This role cemented his place in pop culture history.

Though his chart success waned after the British Invasion, Bobby never stopped performing. He remained a beloved live act for decades, touring the world and connecting with fans who never forgot the joy his music brought them.

Behind the spotlight, his life held deep sorrow. In 2003, his wife Camille died of breast cancer. They had been married for 36 years. Her death sent him into a spiral of grief and alcoholism.

Yet true to his Philly roots, he fought back. In his memoir, Bobby Rydell: Teen Idol on the Rocks: A Tale of Second Chances, he shared his struggles with raw honesty—not for pity, but to offer hope.

In 2012, his health reached a crisis. On July 9, he underwent a life-saving double organ transplant. He received a new liver and kidney at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in his hometown.

Just six months later, in January 2013, he returned to the stage in Las Vegas for a sold-out three-night run, proving that his spirit was as strong as ever.

He went on to tour Australia in 2014, still singing with the same warmth that first won America’s heart.

On April 5, 2022, just 21 days before his 80th birthday, Bobby Rydell passed away from complications of pneumonia at Abington Jefferson Hospital in Pennsylvania. He was 79 years old.

While his final resting place remains private per family wishes, his legacy lives on in every transistor radio memory, every sock hop revival, and every fan who still shouts, “Hey! Hey! Hey! Wild One!”

    • Phil you are absolutely right especially with rap, I go into convulsions when it goes on, can’t move fast enough to turn it off, why did the old crooners go away, seems like most of the male singers now have higher pitch voices, and the girls compete with who can brake a glass with their voice

  1. I’m sure I must know his songs, but never paid much attention to them. Didn’t know what he looked like. But his perfect every hair in place do makes Jack Kennedy’s careful cut (according to Jackie, he was very vain about his hair) look positively carefree. Nice nostalgia, though.
