Not Doing Anything Until I Talk to Dad

Through the years…

4 years : My dad can do everything.

5 years: My dad knows a lot of things.

8 years: My dad doesn’t know everything.

12 years old: Oh well, my dad doesn’t know about that.

14 years old: Don’t mind my dad. He’s so old-fashioned!

25 years old: Dad may know a little bit of that, but otherwise, he’s already his age.

30 years old: I’m not doing anything until I talk to dad.

40 years old: I wonder how dad would have handled this.

50 years: I would give anything for dad to be here to be able to talk about this with him.
Too bad I didn’t value his knowledge, I could have learned a lot from him.

  1. Oh gosh, that hits the “regret” button. I think I did learn, getting older, but that’s because he lived so long, to appreciate what Dad had harvested. He never made much money, but he didn’t put much store by it. The man was amazing; in his late 80’s, he’d want me to take him to a bookstore, where he’d pick up another translation of “War and Peace,” to see how it compared with the others he’d read. He didn’t judge people, because he was so aware of his own flaws. He once had the unreal humility to tell me, of all people, that, “I learned a lot from you.” My sister, who took care of him in her home, now says she misses him more everyday. It must be true; as we age, we start to get it, and Dads look pretty good from that point. And I think they know, in Heaven, that we miss them. So much. Happy Father’s Day, bittersweet as it is.

  2. This is so touching, Jack. You’ve spoken very highly of your father in some of your blog posts, so I know you miss him dearly as I’m sure Dodie misses her father (unless he is still with her). Have a wonderful Father’s Day with your family and enjoy the reverie about your dads. 🙂
