During another unexpected wave of life’s setbacks, Gordon Lee trudged out of the mega oil refinery he worked at near Houston to take a needed smoke break.

It was 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 1999, just a few days before Mother’s Day. Alone, he stopped and thought about his own mother. With a pen in hand, he wrote:
“A man came to the brink of emptiness in his life. He had been to this place before, but for some unknown reason it seemed to be darker than ever.
“The void was not new to him, twice in his time, he had searched with heart & soul to find what all of humanity yearned for….happiness.
“As he gazed at the stars within the night sky, a sigh escaped from within his soul & quietly he pondered, why me?

“From his very inner being, he heard a tender, gentle voice say to him, “Don’t worry son, take your life one day at a time, do the best you can, and hopefully, you’ll find what you seek.”
“As the man turned away from the brink, he noticed a smile was on his face and a song was giving its joy to his voice.
“As he continued his life journey, he said to the night sky, “I love you dearly. Thanks Mom!“
Gordon Lee’s Mother’s Day story reminds me of one told by Xochit Dixon.
After he turned nineteen, and years before he owned a pager or cell phone, Dixon had moved more than 700 miles away from his mom.
“One morning, I woke up early to run some errands forgetting our scheduled call,” he began. “Later that night, two policemen came to my door.”

His mother had been worried that they had missed their chat. After calling repeatedly and getting a busy signal, she reached out to authorities and insisted they check on her son.
One of the police officers turned to him and said, “It’s a blessing to know love won’t stop looking for you.”
When he picked up the phone to call his mother, Dixon realized he had accidentally left the receiver off its base.
After he apologized, she told him she needed to spread the good news to the family and friends she had informed that he had been missing.

Scripture paints a beautiful picture of God, who is Love, relentlessly beckoning His wandering children. Like a good shepherd, He cares about and seeks out every lost sheep, affirming the priceless value of every beloved child of God (Luke 15: 1-7).
Like a mother’s love, God never stops looking for us. He will pursue us until we have returned to Him. We can pray for others who need to know that Love–God–never stops looking for them either.
Thomas Edison’s Mom
The youngest of Nancy Edisonโs seven kids was Thomas Alva Edison.
Rather than give up on his education, Nancy Edison decided to homeschool her son after his teacher deemed him โaddledโ (meaning mentally ill or incompetent).

Edison, who may just have been dyslexic in a time before that learning disorder was studied or understood, said of her:
โMy mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.โ

The Country Music We Sang Along to in the Car
Dearest Mommy,
Thinking back to my childhood, I remember the little things that made our bond so specialโthe cold water swims on hot summer days, the running jokes weโve kept alive for years, the country music we sang along to in the car. Youโve been my most constant thing in life, and Iโm so grateful for you.

Even in the roughest breaks, you taught me to find the good thing in every situation. Whether it was helping me through sibling rivalries, sharing an inside joke after a tough day, or reminding me that the last days of school drinking hot cocoa at home were something to treasure, you always knew how to make life better.
You have given me the perfect giftโyour love, your wisdom, and your strength. You are the best mom I could ever ask for. Wishing you the happiest Motherโs Day!
Forever grateful,
Martha
Erma Bombeck
Humor writer Erma Bombeck (1927โ1996) wrote books and syndicated newspaper columns about life as a suburban housewife in the Midwest.

Taking inspiration from her experiences with her adopted daughter and two biological sons, she told stories and made quips about housework that helped a generation of stay-at-home and newly working mothers find humor in the messiness of their lives.
As one might assume from her sharp-witted jokes, she brought her children up to be independent and passionate.
โShe liked people who were strong and held their ownโshe was a very big presence,โ her daughter Betsyย said. โIf you couldnโt hold your own, she could roll over you.โ
Made it to This Healthy Place
Hey Mom,
First of all, can you believe that I’ve turned into the type of person who writes a letter to my mother? I can hardly believe it myself. But I’ve made it to this healthy place because of you.

Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me. Thank you for not giving up on me. And most of all, thank you for showering me with unconditional love.
A lot of parents wouldn’t have stuck by my side, but you did, and I’ll spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to show you my appreciation and affection.
In gratitude,
Lorene

These Mother’s Day letters yanked at my my heartstrings. Erma Bombeck’s “A Mother’s Love” lists many of the challenges of motherhood that parental love gets you through. I read her column without fail and remember reading this many years ago-it was that impactful. ๐
