The Malibu, California House That Survived the 2025 Fire

This is the house of a righteous man.

Many people are talking about a photo of this house in California, where all the buildings around it were on fire, and only this house miraculously survived the fire without any harm.

On a Russian language website, people have added different interpretations for this phenomenon and some have called this house – “This is the house of a righteous man.”

The three-story contemporary mansion belongs to former Waste Management CEO David Steiner.

While his white mansion remains standing with no visible damage, the homes on both sides and along the coastline were nothing but charred, smoking ruins.

“I don’t use the word ‘miracle,’” Steiner told ABC13 Eyewitness News of his home’s survival. He bought the house in 2015 and doesn’t live in it full time.

It is located in Malibu and is valued at $9 million.
It has three floors and is about 4,200 square feet.

While the house was constructed using fire-resistant materials such as stucco and stone and a fire-resistant roof,
when the neighboring houses were destroyed, the only thing that helped this house to survive was the time-honored technology used.

“I say that it’s great architecture, brave firefighters, and maybe a little dash of miracle,” he added, speculating that the home’s “concrete design” helped it survive.

“The major factors affecting whether a home will ignite in a firestorm has to do with the materials it is constructed of, its state of repair, and the management of surrounding decorative vegetation,” adds Wayne Whitney, fire investigator with Fire Scene Analysis.

“David Steiner’s Malibu mansion includes pilings driven 50 feet into the bedrock,” explains fire safety expert Daniel Vasilevski, of Bright Force Electrical. “While these are primarily meant to provide stability during seismic activity, they make homes more resistant to wildfires as well. A deeply anchored foundation resists heat-induced shifting or cracking in the ground, which could otherwise weaken the structure and expose it to flames or embers.”

Example of how one house survived in a neighborhood.

David Steiner was the Chief Executive Officer of Waste Management, Inc. from 2004 until 2016, where he played a key role in turning around the company and promoting sustainability initiatives. He previously held various positions within the company, including Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel.

  1. Maybe the house with a red roof survived the wildfire that burned down the surrounding neighborhood because it had fire resistant materials that thwarted the fires. But what about the surrounding bushes? They’re not charred like other bushes in the neighborhood. 🙂

  2. Some possible options:

    a. Building materials and building design.

    b. Removal of debris from yard.

    c. Dumb luck with the winds or the fire fighters in the right location.

    d. Someone’s angel working double time.

  3. I was hitchhiking through Idaho a number of years ago and got dropped off in Grangeville. I walked to the local library and checked my emails. I got an email from a friend who lived near Mokelumne Hill, California. There were these wildfires raging near her home. The Lord told her to ask me to pray that the Lord would protect her home. So I said a short prayer for her home and her family there at the library.

A week or two later, she sent me another email. Her family lives out in the country in a small subdivision where there are four homes all in a row. They were all told to evacuate their homes. They came back a week or so later and all four homes were not touched by the fire. Someone even snuck in at night to feed and water their animals, so the animals also survived. Her home was on one end of the subdivision and another Christian family was on the other end of the subdivision, so it was like the two Christian families on each end of the subdivision protected the other two homes.

Another time I was hitchhiking in Idaho and this lady picked me up. There were these fires burning around Kamiah. She lived out in the country. They had to evacuate their home, so she prayed and asked the Lord to protect her home. She came back some days later and noticed that the fire had burned the grass to within fifty feet of her home. Her home never got touched and the grass was very dry.

Very dry grass that never got burned: sounds like the Hand of God. Praise the Lord!
