Alamo Springs Cafe Is a Texas Hill Country Legend Near Fredericksburg

A time capsule of Texas Hill Country charm, the Alamo Springs Cafe, 107 Alamo Road, Fredericksburg, TX 78624, is a bit out of the way, but that didn’t stop me from riding along with the King Scout of Texas Roadside Cafes, Mr. Michael Sheffield, back in 2004 for my first visit.

Mike Sheffield & Jack Dennis

Mike, a legendary “Partner” (employee) of H-E-B Food-Drugs since 1974, is known for his talent for finding the best eateries across Texas roads and highways. If he recommends it, you can bank on deliciousness.

Alamo Springs Cafe (ASC), located VERY close to Old Tunnel State Park (home to up to 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats and 3,000 cave myotis bats from May through October. Rangers open the park in the evening for bat viewing and programs).

ASC, a Fredericksburg staple, reopened after a temporary closing on December 26, 2024 with new owners Selena and Tony Flores taking over the reigns from former owner Mike Tangman.

The flagship menu item, known as the Alamo Burger or the El Jefe Challenge, is a very tall  cheeseburger filled with 2.5 lbs. of ground beef equalling six large hamburger patties.

It is served with a LARGE order of fries, placing it among the most legendary food challenges of Texas including:

● The Wagon Wheel pizza-sized Chicken Fried Steak in Eagle Pass

● The Big Texan 72-ounce Steak Dinner Challenge that includes: Shrimp Cocktail, Baked Potato, Salad, with Roll, Butter, and of course the 72oz Steak

If you can eat all of a ASC champion burger, fries and stay at the table for another 15 minutes, you’ll get your burger for free, plus an Alamo Springs  T-shirt. Plus, your picture will be added to the exclusive “ASC Wall of Fame.”

Tangman and his wife Cindy opened the restaurant on June 3, 2004 but decided to retire in 2019 after 15 years at the helm. He “owner-financed” the restaurant to a new owner, but the restaurant closed shop in July 2024.

Raised in Fredericksburg, Selena Flores knew restoring the Alamo Springs Café to its original glory was a good idea.

The Tangmans have worked hard to bring the old-time ambience of the original cafe and even studied old photos to bring the building as close to when it first opened.

Equally important, is that the Flores family are returning to the original ingredients with recipes that ASC guests love.

Many diners still remember the 2009 Texas Monthly cover featuring their green chili burger with grilled onions, tomato, mustard, mayonnaise and lettuce on a white bun, which remains very popular.

Although the cafe has only re-opened less than two months (and it is winter, not a big tourist season) I am going to give them a composite rating of my experiences over the years. When we are in that area, I usually make it a point to eat there, even bypassing some of the more popular restaurants in Fredericksburg.

My rating for Alamo Springs Cafe is 8.8 out of 10.

  1. The food looks delicious! But, hopefully, Alamo Springs Cafe has an automated external defibrillator (AED) available in their building in case someone wolfs down the 72 ounce steak dinner or the Champion burger tower. 🙂

  2. I do not think that my Dad, legendary food wolfer that he was, could manage that Champion Burger. Although he routinely could eat a whole large pizza, but that burger is a stunner. These photos are making want to come and take a tour of Texas cafes and eat everything in them. I’d be as big as Texas by the time the rounds were done.

    • I am sure every state has such good places. I don’t travel as much as I use to, but wrote many reviews over the years. Wish I could go back & retreive them from Examiner, AXS, News Legit, etc but they are now defunct or not doing articles any more. AXS now sells concert tickets.
