Presidents William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield both had a passion for squirrel meat. Grover Cleveland loved pickled herring.

William Howard Taft refused to eat eggs and Ronald Reagan went 70 years without eating a tomato. Famously, George H.W. Bush banned broccoli from the White House kitchen and Air Force One.
In 1969, the 37th President of the United States hosted a state dinner for the prime minister of Canada.
Afterward, he complained to Bob Haldeman, his chief of staff that fancy dinners “take forever.” But the president had a solution.
“Why don’t we just leave out the soup course,” Richard Nixon said. “Men don’t really like soup.”

Haldeman suspected an ulterior motive for the soup hatred. So he called up the president’s valet and asked, “Was there anything wrong with the president’s suit after that dinner last night?”
The valet confirmed it: “He spilled soup down the vest.”

For the rest of Nixon’s time in office, the White House never served soup.

Thanks! I didn’t know that. Unfortunately, the Presidents that loved squirrel meat didn’t have much time in the White House to enjoy it. They had the shortest Presidencies. I didn’t think Taft refused to eat anything from his photos.

I like soup, had some home made chicken soup last night. I agree it can be messy when you have a beard or a mustache, but I have endured. I’ve gone 75 years without eating Squirrel or Possum.

Soup man myself. Love Love Love it. I’m still in my 60s but don’t want to eat anything Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies would consider putting on her kettle.

I tried, and loved Polk Salad, but that’s about it from Granny’s kitchen.

Hopefully, Robert Kennedy Jr will have some influence on the White House menu. DT needs to dine on something healthier than McDonald’s and diet coke. 🙂

I could live on soup, but I cannot imagine going seventy years without eating a tomato!
