When Serving Soup Was Banned at the White House

Presidents William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield both had a passion for squirrel meat. Grover Cleveland loved pickled herring.

William Howard Taft refused to eat eggs and Ronald Reagan went 70 years without eating a tomato. Famously, George H.W. Bush banned broccoli from the White House kitchen and Air Force One.

In 1969, the 37th President of the United States hosted a state dinner for the prime minister of Canada.

Afterward, he complained to Bob Haldeman, his chief of staff that fancy dinners “take forever.” But the president had a solution.

“Why don’t we just leave out the soup course,” Richard Nixon said. “Men don’t really like soup.”

Haldeman suspected an ulterior motive for the soup hatred. So he called up the president’s valet and asked, “Was there anything wrong with the president’s suit after that dinner last night?”

The valet confirmed it: “He spilled soup down the vest.”

For the rest of Nixon’s time in office, the White House never served soup.

  1. Thanks! I didn’t know that. Unfortunately, the Presidents that loved squirrel meat didn’t have much time in the White House to enjoy it. They had the shortest Presidencies. I didn’t think Taft refused to eat anything from his photos.
