Update: Trump’s 1st DEA Choice Withdraws

Social media was exploding when citizens pushed back against Donald Trump’s announced pick of Chad Chronister, a Florida Sheriff, for his DEA Administrator.

By Tuesday, Dec. 3, he withdrew from opportunity.

In 2018, George Chronister, the son of Hillsborough County Sheriff Chronister, was sentenced to twenty-two months in prison for stabbing a man in the face the previous year.

This was likely the first time this sheriff made national news.

“The first cut was centimeters from my eye,” the victim, Phillip Manzi said in court. “The second cut punctured my lung. I was left bleeding in the parking lot.”

The Sheriff’s son was a self-proclaimed amateur rapper using the name ZChronik. He even wrote about the stabbing in a song called “Slash Yo Face” which was played in court.

During the George Floyd riots of May 31st, 2020, he told his deputies to stand down and multiple buildings were burned down including the Walmart on Fletcher Avenue in Tampa which was completely looted.

During Covid, Chronister arrested Dr. Rodney Howard-Browne, the pastor of a popular church in Tampa for holding worship services.

Chronister had warned the pastor several times that State Attorney Andrew Warren had issued several arrest warrants for holding services in The River Church, Tampa Bay, in violation of the county’s emergency orders.

Howard-Browne continued holding services but voluntarily turned himself at the sheriff’s office, where he was booked and released on a $500 bond.

Governor Ron DeSantis stepped in directing these Emergency Policy Departments to reverse their stance and exempt churches from these lockdown restrictions.

Chronister soon released 164 people from his county lock up because of Covid. A week later one of those people released committed murder.

How did Chronister treat his deputies during Covid?

In June 2023, Chronister responded to Florida’s new immigration law Senate Bill 1718 that included consequences for those who transport undocumented aliens and penalties for employers who hire them.

“We do not target individuals based on their immigration status – that’s the authority of federal agencies. Our goal is to build trust and foster strong partnerships with all residents regardless of background,” Chronister said.

Trump’s Attorney General pick, Pam Bondi and Florida’s current Attorney General Ashley Moody have endorsed Chronister.

“I’ve known Chad since he was a deputy and watched him work in almost every aspect of the Sheriff’s Office,” Bondi said. “He is honest, hardworking and dedicated. He epitomizes what a Sheriff should be. He’s always upheld the oath he took to keep our community safe. I’m proud to support Sheriff Chronister.”

Chronister has worked with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since 1992. He was appointed to succeed former Sheriff David Gee, then elected in 2018.

As news of Trump’s choice for DEA head is Chronister, Floridian’s took to social media with their concerns.

“His office promotes transgendering teens by participating in the Tampa Pride event and created a liaison office for transgenders and other pride affiliates.”

“Chronister expanded his office’s DEI programs and has been a major proponent of anti-white male discrimination by removing merit as a primary role of advancement, turning to race and gender-based hiring and promotion policies.”

“He is a big Democrat donor. He gave money to Democrats Barack Obama, Mayor Jane Castor, Congresswoman Kathy Castor, Congressman Charlie Crist and the DNC.”
