What to Do if You Hold Grudges & Resist Forgiving Others

Forgiveness is a central part of the Christian faith.

Jesus taught us to forgive, as God has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:32).

Holding grudges or harboring resentment toward others not only harms relationships but also creates a barrier between you and God. If you find it difficult to forgive others, it may be a sign that your heart is not aligned with Christโ€™s example.

The world may advocate kindness when itโ€™s convenient or forgiveness when it serves us, but Godโ€™s standard is higher and constant: unconditional love.

Jesusโ€™ own words remind us, โ€œIf you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sinsโ€ (Matthew 6:15).

A hardened heart towards forgiveness signals that we have not fully embraced the grace that has been freely given to us.

Jesusโ€™ life and ministry were marked by compassion and a love that reached across boundaries. He cared deeply for the marginalized, the lost, and those rejected by society. When asked about the greatest commandment, He said, โ€œLove the Lord your God with all your heartโ€ฆ and love your neighbor as yourselfโ€ (Matthew 22:37-39).

Following Christ means allowing His love and mercy to soften our hearts, teaching us to extend that same grace to others. By forgiving, we emulate Christโ€™s love and break free from bitterness, healing relationships and drawing closer to God.
