Where Was the First of 1,500+ Church’s Chicken Located?

In 1952, retired chicken incubator salesman George W. Church Sr. opened the first Church’s Chicken, named Church’s Fried Chicken To-Go in San Antonio,Texas.

Across from the Alamo, the first location in 1952 was at 111 South Alamo Street.

The location offered two pieces of chicken and a roll at a cost of 49 cents. Church’s Chicken added fries and jalapeños to its menu in 1955.

In 1956, just four years after the first location opened, Church’s Fried Chicken had four locations in San Antonio. By 1967, the chain had restaurants in five other Texas cities and would later become the first Texas-based chain to go national.

Today, there are more than 1500 locations in 26 countries, with a system-wide sales of more than $1 billion.

In the post-pandemic era, Church’s ranked number 19 in Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 Fastest Growing International Franchise category in 2023.

A recent press release indicates they are “inspired by our San Antonio roots, we’ve been servin’ up your favorites as Church’s Chicken. Now, over 70 years later, we’re bringing it back to where it all began with a fresh and modern look and a new middle name too. It’s Church’s Texas Chicken. Same Church’s you’ve always loved, now in a bold new era.”

Church’s Texas Chicken is known outside the Americas as Texas Chicken and caters to a variety of different tastes from country to country and region to region. The brand’s international restaurants include local specialties to create an even wider appeal to customers.

The brands specialize in Original and Spicy Chicken freshly prepared throughout the day in small batches that are hand-battered and double-breaded, tenders, sandwiches, Honey-Butter Biscuits™  made from scratch and freshly baked, and classic, home-style sides all for a great value.

  1. Do you know I have never even seen a Church’s? All we have up here is KFC and Roadie’s at the gas station. In self defense, I have had to learn to make my own, and it’s getting there.

If I want the real deal, there is Mama Dip’s in Chapel Hill, just 1200 miles away or so.

Maybe New England is afraid of Texas Fried Chicken???
