Attorney General William Barr’s last full day in office for the Trump Administration was Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2020, as he officially stepped down on Christmas Eve.

Before leaving, Barr provided clues to the status of US Attorney John Durham’s investigation of the Obama Administration’s FBI counterintelligence activities into the Trump campaign.

In an interview with Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel, Barr carefully chose his words to say Durham’s probe has exposed a “willful if small group of people” involved in an attempt to “topple an administration” and remove President Trump from office.

Barr revealed that the investigation has honed in on “the conduct of Crossfire Hurricane, the small group at the FBI that was most involved in that,” as well as “the activities of certain private actors.”

Barr indicated that by retiring, he is now “in a position in life where I can do the right thing and not really care about the consequences.”

Mr. Barr told Strassel that his primary objective was to ensure there is “one standard of justice” and that was the impetus of why he originally appointed Durham to lead the investigation of the FBI’s 2016 Crossfire Hurricane case.

“Of course the Russians did bad things in the election,” Barr said. “But the idea that this was done with the collusion of the Trump campaign — there was never any evidence. It was entirely made up.”

The fact that the Robert “Mueller team seems to have been ready to blindly accept anything fed to it by the system, is exactly what DOJ should not be,” Barr said.

Barr accepted that people were upset that results from Durham’s probe were not released before the election, but they had to be extremely careful in the legal logistics to ensure highest degree of integrity. Plus, some of the subjects are very powerful and cunning people. No slipups or mistakes could be tolerated.

Many concerns, ranging from massive federal grand jury delays caused by the China Virus pandemic to wait till the end of 2019 for Inspector General Michael Horowitz to complete his investigation into the FBI’s conduct, slowed progress.

“Barr suggested that those who seek justice should not lose heart just because Durham was not being loud in carrying out his business,” Strassel reported.

He explained that prosecutors who “break more china” do not “necessarily get the results.”

In September 2020, Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe declassified a document revealing that the FBI was warned in 2016 that the Hillary Clinton campaign was behind the “collusion” claims.

Barr said that the FBI’s conduct during their counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign was “outrageous.”

Barr talked about why he elected not to disclose information that Hunter Biden is under federal criminal investigation over his taxes and foreign business dealings.

“A lot of Republicans think that’s playing by Robert’s Rules — you are being soft on the other side,” Barr said. “And I understand that frustration.”

“It’s painful that the system is used against Republicans and there is an AG not willing to do the same thing against Democrats,” Barr observed. “But that is the only way we find our way back.”

“Think about the power it would give the federal bureaucracy,” Barr said. “The standard for investigating someone is low. So just gin up an investigation, make it public, affect every election.”
