When Serving Soup Was Banned at the White House

Presidents William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield both had a passion for squirrel meat. Grover Cleveland loved pickled herring.

William Howard Taft refused to eat eggs and Ronald Reagan went 70 years without eating a tomato. Famously, George H.W. Bush banned broccoli from the White House kitchen and Air Force One.

In 1969, the 37th President of the United States hosted a state dinner for the prime minister of Canada.

Afterward, he complained to Bob Haldeman, his chief of staff that fancy dinners “take forever.” But the president had a solution.

“Why donโ€™t we just leave out the soup course,” Richard Nixon said. “Men donโ€™t really like soup.โ€

Haldeman suspected an ulterior motive for the soup hatred. So he called up the president’s valet and asked, โ€œWas there anything wrong with the presidentโ€™s suit after that dinner last night?โ€

The valet confirmed it: โ€œHe spilled soup down the vest.โ€

For the rest of Nixon’s time in office, the White House never served soup.

  1. Thanks! I didn’t know that. Unfortunately, the Presidents that loved squirrel meat didn’t have much time in the White House to enjoy it. They had the shortest Presidencies. I didn’t think Taft refused to eat anything from his photos.
