Baltic Sea Telecom Cables Cut, Space Force on Alert

On Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, a telecom cable between Finland and Germany was cut in the Baltic Sea.

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, a telecom cable was cut between Sweden and Lithuania.

These two cables are within 10 miles from each other.

Note that both Finland and Sweden are new NATO partners.

One of the cables, active since 2016, runs near inactive NordStream pipelines.

The Danish Navy Patrol Vessel HDMS Rota (P525) had been following the Chinese Bulk Carrier Yi Peng 3 as it moved from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea near Denmark. The Chinese ship is suspected to be involved in the severing of communication cables in the Baltic Sea.

YiPeng3 was eventually stopped by the Danish navy and was forced to anchor at sea in Danish waters. P525 eventually left that location while Navy Diving boat Y311 became “in charge” of that military operation and anchored next to YiPeng3.

As of this writing, Danish military divers have been observing and checking that ship. YiPeng3 departed in Russian harbour Ust-Luga where it has been for some time after arriving from Murmansk (Russia) in early November.

According to Russian federal port records, the Chinese ship suspected of cutting the communications cables in the Baltic Sea was captained by a Russian citizen, Stechentsev, Alexander Evgenievich.  It is believed the current captain is Chinese, as Yi Peng3 was only transferred to its current owner in China earlier this month.

The ship has been carrying goods/oil from Ust-Luga in Russia, to Port Said in Egypt. This same captain also commandeered URSUS ARCTOS, also carrying goods from Ust-Luga to Egypt.

Meanwhile, more and more Russian weapons used in the war against Ukraine are built with Chinese components. One of the Chinese ships was actually docked in Russia last week.

A ship was sent to repair C-Lion cable, but the process could take several weeks due to wear conditions.

According to one source, that ship departed from Russian harbor Ust-Luga, but has now been stopped by Danish navy. It was forced to anchor at sea in Danish waters and is currently being inspected by Danish navy divers.

The ship had been in Ust-Luga for two weeks, almost daily departing and then again arriving back to Ust-Luga after 1-2 day trips towards nowhere in the Baltic sea. Previously in early November it stopped in the harbour of Murmansk (Russia) for several days for “repair” and “construction work”.

While undersea cables are in abundance globally, StarLink and Space Force makes sense.

The potential disruption of these cables could have far-reaching consequences, impacting everything from individual communications to global financial systems.

Thankfully, the establishment of Space Force during President Donald J. Trump’s term in office could become critically important. As a branch of the United States Armed Forces, the Space Force is tasked with space warfare and space operations.

Its mandate includes ensuring the security of the United States’ space-based communication assets, a responsibility that has gained increased significance in light of these potential threats.

Fortunately, it is normal for households in Nordic nations to receive booklets outlining how to prepare for military conflicts, communication disruptions, and power outages.
