5 Quick True Car Camping Chillers

A group of car camping enthusiasts were asked “have you ever had an experience that brought chills up your spine?”

Here were some of the answers:

I was camping six miles away from California City, in the desert, when I saw lights emerge from the sky and start to drift in my direction, flickering oddly.

The lights literally appeared way up in the air and floated down. They slowly moved back and forth from left to right, undulating and flashing, moving towards me.

I just sat there wide eyed and watched.

I realized I was basically doomed so I said whatever and ignored it, went to sleep and figured I’d just be wiped out by aliens, or whatever, I don’t actually care.

In the morning I woke up, looked to the direction of the lights and there was a road there that came down from a mountain, so it was just a car coming over the summit and driving down to sea level.

The lights looked that way because they were being interfered with by the ground level vegetation. –Matthew Berdyck

Swear we met a pixie!!

We were camping in our trailer, usually there’s a nice big group of us but this time it was just my husband, 2 year old, myself and our 100 lb dog.

We got there about 10 pm backed in unhitched and started a fire. It was off season so we were pretty much alone.. about an hour after we get there a tiny little human comes down on a 4 wheeler to introduce herself as camp host.

Our dog never alerted us someone was coming. She let us know she had hot water for soup if we needed any. Her name was “Rainbow” we said thank you and she went on her way.

Not even 20 feet into the darkness we no longer hear her vehicle. No lights, no sound, nothing. Both my husband and I were really creeped out so we put our fire out, went inside locked up and laughed it off. But the whole time we stayed during that trip we never saw her again. –Mayra Johnson

While rustic tent camping deep in the woods of Michigan’s upper peninsula with my sister and her friend, a very loud, hard smacking of what sounded like a baseball bat against a tree trunk demanded our attention.

The noise came from a very creepy looking forest just about 80 feet from our site. We sat there listening as it continued every few minutes.

The area where we were located is very isolated and far from any type of civilization and no cell phone service so we were on our own.

After about 30 minutes of this, I grabbed protection and went to see what was making the noise. I crept slowly toward the noise and when I was confident it was about 10 feet directly in front of me, I turned on the flashlight.

Nothing. There was a porcupine on the side of a tree a few feet away but nothing else. I have no idea how or if the porcupine could or did make the noise but the whole experience was nerve-wracking and left me with questions.
There was no noise after lighting up the forest with light. –Tim Miklos

We were looking at petroglyph in 9 mile canyon. It was a great day, but there were so many petroglyph panels that we didn’t make it out of the canyon before dark.

We pulled over at an ancient homestead and snooped around… then we felt it. Some sort of unspoken dread, an immutable feeling of being watched. It seriously felt like pure malice and venom being ground into our souls, but I assumed it was just my own feelings of creepiness.
We hiked back to the van and went to sleep without incident.

No lie… 3am… right on the dot, we all woke up screaming from nightmares. Each nightmare like a customized horror. We peeled out of there and never looked back, and we have never been back. –Jayo Salda

While camping in Colorado near Crested Butte during a rain storm, I thought I heard some noise over the sound of rain hitting the tent.

(Flashlight/looked around/didn’t see anything in the night)- fast forward to the next morning and there was a cow with the hind legs missing about 100ft from my roof top tent. –Brett Summer

  1. These are weird, alright. I think I can explain the whacking in the creepy forest, though. Many springs (if this was in Spring) around May or so, the bucks in the woods have finished growing their new antlers, which are covered with a velvety substance which begins to itch like mad once the growth is done. So the itchy buck goes from tree to tree whacking the stuff off his pristine new rack. I’ve heard it many times outside the house, and it’s loud.

The horrible venomous hatred and nightmares by the old house? Resident demons. The others? Don’t ask me! This was fascinating.
