A brave Stanford junior just dropped a bombshell in Congress, revealing how Chinese Communist Party agents are openly hunting American students on U.S. soil while woke universities look the other way.
Elsa Johnson, a junior studying East Asian studies and Editor-in-Chief of the independent Stanford Review, testified before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce about her terrifying ordeal with a suspected CCP operative.

Johnson said that Chinese Communist Party operatives have physically monitored her on campus. They also referenced her mother in intimidation calls and pressured her to destroy evidence. Meanwhile, the university largely left her to handle it alone.
Her testimony before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce was about what she described as a sustained campaign of “transnational repression” targeting her and at least 10 other female students since 2020.

The alleged targeting began during her freshman year while she was researching Chinese industry and military tactics at the Hoover Institution. A man calling himself Charles Chen contacted her via social media, offering a paid trip to China and asking for personal background information. He then commented publicly on one of her Instagram posts in Mandarin, demanding she delete screenshots from their conversation.

“I do not know how he knew I had these screenshots,” Johnson said.
The FBI confirmed Chen was not affiliated with Stanford and investigated him as an operative of China’s Ministry of State Security.
The harassment escalated after Johnson began publishing investigative reporting on the suspected espionage. She said she received intimidation calls where callers switched to Mandarin mid-conversation. She also received threatening scam emails pressuring her to take down her reporting. Most recently, she got a call from a suspected CCP operative just last week.

“This fall, the FBI informed me that I am being physically monitored on Stanford’s campus by agents of the CCP and that my family is also being watched,” Johnson testified.
Johnson said she was “a freshman navigating a foreign intelligence operation with no institutional support,” and accused Stanford of being “very reluctant to engage” with her concerns. The Hoover Institution ultimately connected her with the FBI, not Stanford itself.
American Students Pressured to use WeChat to Correspond With Chinese Spies
Here is her full testimony:
“My name is Elsa Johnson. I’m a junior at Stanford University studying East Asian studies with a focus on China, and I serve as the Editor-in-Chief of The Stanford Review.
I am here because I was personally targeted by a suspected agent of the Chinese Communist Party while conducting research at Stanford on Chinese industry and military tactics.
In 2023, I was approached on social media by an individual using the alias ‘Charles Chen,’ who claimed to be a Stanford student. He offered me paid trips to China and pressured me to download monitored apps like WeChat. The interactions escalated to physical surveillance on campus.
After I published an exposé in The Stanford Review in 2025 detailing a CCP-orchestrated intelligence-gathering operation at Stanford—where agents impersonated students to probe U.S. research—the harassment intensified. I received intimidation calls, including one that referenced my mother and demanded I delete material from my phone. There was a blitz of harassing calls.

I met with the FBI in September and handed over everything I had. The FBI confirmed that Charles Chen had no real affiliation with Stanford. He had likely posed as a student for years and used multiple fabricated social media profiles to target students researching China-related topics. I was told he was likely operating on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security. I later found out that I was one of at least ten other female students targeted by ‘Charles Chen’ since 2020.
The FBI informed me that I am being physically monitored on Stanford’s campus by agents of the CCP and that my family is also being watched.
Stanford has been very reluctant to engage with me on this issue and has not implemented dedicated reporting mechanisms despite available resources.
I am asking Congress to recognize that American universities are failing to protect students who face transnational repression on their campuses. Our universities have become soft targets for foreign espionage, and they need a serious wake-up call to address these significant national security threats.”
This is not some isolated incident. It’s part of Beijing’s aggressive campaign to infiltrate America’s best schools, steal research, intimidate critics, and silence anyone who dares expose them. The FBI has confirmed the threat is real, yet elite institutions like Stanford drag their feet and prioritize appeasement over student safety.
Enough is enough. Conservative lawmakers like Rep. Elise Stefanik are shining a light on this disgrace. It’s time to defund universities that coddle communist spies, demand real security measures on campus, and put American students and national security first. Weak leadership on this front isn’t just negligent—it’s dangerous.
