95% of Americans don’t meet recommendations for daily fiber intake, and 15% of the U.S. population struggles with chronic constipation.

Since our bodies don’t digest fiber, they need fluids to push it through—and out—our digestive systems. Drink water!
Numerous studies have found that prunes and prune juice increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency without significant side effects.
One study found that drinking 2 ounces of prune juice every day for eight weeks softened stool and relieved constipation for participants.
They all had chronic constipation and ranged in age from 20 to 75, so this drink may be beneficial for adults of all ages.
Also, note that 2 ounces—which is about 4 tablespoons—is not a lot, so it only took a small amount of prune juice to get things moving.
Sorbitol is what makes prune juice stand out the most. This sugar alcohol helps draw water into the stool, softening it and making it easier to pass.

It exerts a similar effect to soluble fiber, another nutrient in prune juice.
Note that if you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and follow a “low-FODMAP diet, prunes are probably not your friend.
Though sorbitol helps people poop, it can be too much of a good thing with IBS, gifting you with the opposite issue and bringing on diarrhea, gas and bloating.

This is good advice for a natural alternative to an embarrassing problem. I eat prunes for bone health. Six a day are recommended to improve bone density, but that’s 22 grams of sugar. I do three and eat nuts at the same time to slow the sugar absorption. 🙂

This might of interest as well for bone density. Osteoarthritis is big in my family, Nodes in all knuckles of the hand, hip pain, ankles seizing up, the crunching sound in the knees when climbing stairs and pain. I tried making homemade gummy bears and made a mistake by not putting in enough gelatin. So I had this large pan of homemade Jello made out of 100% fruit juice. Took me a better part of the week to finish by myself. By weeks end I felt different. So I googled my mistake ended up on Knox gelatin website. Discovered the benefits of gelatin or Jello. Further discovery gelatin helps with arthritis. It’s a building block when combined with Collagen ( which I’ve taken for a number of years). It also helps with lining of the intestines, helps with bowel movements, builds bone density and adds shine and tone to hair, skin, nails, eyes. I started in May with my mistake and now I’m everyday eating a bowel of jello in the evening and hubby is eating as well. I happily report the pain in my right hip has subsided tremendously, my knees still crackle but I can climb the stairs better, no problems lifting heavy items like before. When I bend down no problem getting up in pain like before. I remember when visiting family in Germany in the 70’s. People eating Jello in the evenings. Turns out they were eating it as digestive aid as well. I’m in it for the long haul. Lots of jugs of Ocean Spray Juice and bulk no flavour gelatin.

You’ve reminded me that my mother used to put Knox unflavored gelatin in her drinks. She told me it was for her nails. I think I’ll try it for my bones/joints. Thank you! 🙂

Now that is smart. Nurse Dodie makes sure we do similar things.

Prunes are great. Figs taste better and so do dates. And sauerkraut or kimchi do wonderful things. Like get rid of reflux. Water gets everything moving.
Yup, bold article! Had to read it!

I have to admit when I read this article. I started laughing. What comes to my mind. An All in the Family episode. When Edith kept receiving a quarter from the Prune Company. In the end when returning the money she ends up with cans of prunes. Many years ago when I started working in a nursing home putting out glasses of prune juice on the table for the residents. Yup not a fan of the stuff eating or drinking. I take 3 times a week cayene pepper supplement. Nature’s Way is my preferred brand. This supplement helps with circulation as well as colon friendly. What’s nice about this method it keeps the colon clear, dilates arteries, veins etc. My husband and I have always had clean stools, colons, and other positive outcomes.

I’ve read that hot spices like that help with inflamation, too, especially cumin. But I didn’t know about the ones you said. More cayenne!
