6,000 Year Old Hunting Kit Found Near Big Bend National Park in Texas

While searching San Esteban Rockshelter outside Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas, archaeologists came across a 6,000-year-old hunting kit that may be the oldest intact weapon set ever discovered in North America.

The cache included part of a spear-throwing tool known as an atlatl, 10 shafts that connected stone points to the weapon, and the ends of four darts.

Researchers also uncovered a straight-flying boomerang that ancient hunters would have used to kill or incapacitate small game.

What’s more, archaeologists found a tanned pronghorn hide that still contained hair neatly folded atop a rock beside the kit as if whoever left it there “had every intention in the world of coming back.”

“The hide, which belonged to an antelope-like animal called a pronghorn, still had intact hair of its original color, preserved over thousands of years,” wrote Smithsonian Magazine.

Beyond the hunting implements, archaeologists also unearthed human feces – which can provide valuable dietary and health information.

  1. This is amazing. Maybe the hot dry weather in Texas helped preserve these ancient artifacts. Surely, if the owner of the tools had returned to the cave, he would have made a cowboy hat from the hide. 🙂
