Nicole Refused to Leave Her Horse in the Mud

COURAGE OF A WOMAN

Nicole Graham was out for an afternoon ride with her daughter when her 18-year-old horse, Astro, suddenly sunk neck deep into the thick mud of Avalon Beach in Geelong, Victoria.

Graham refused to leave her horse abandoned and sentenced to certain death. Fighting against a rising tide, members of the fire department, emergency services, and a vet attempted to free the 1,100-pound horse.

First they tried using fire hoses, then a winch.

She spent 3 hours clinging to the animal while she struggled not to sink in the mud.

Making little progress, the vet, Stacey Sullivan, sedated him so that he could be pulled out with a tractor.

She accompanied him at all times.

She kept his head up so that he wouldn’t drown in a time fight while the tide rose.

She hugged and calmed the animal until he was rescued.

  1. Having been the keeper of a few ranch horses, back when I had a ranch, I can say that they are loving and loyal, second only to a dog. I do miss both of them. Problem was, they were to big to be lap horses, but they tried.
